1. I dont find SW prices cheaper than what my irish blood can find

2. I will support a local shop before i support a national chain - so in my little dorp that puts SW about no 5 or 6 in the pecking order...just after cyclelab

Most successful bike shops are run by cyclists for cyclists, guys who have ridden what I ride, understand what will work for the type of riding I want to do, know the trails I want to ride, know what works with what. I think it's highly optimistic to expect a shop assistant on the retail floor to know this stuff without actually getting out there with the customers on the trails. And not just riding with the boss once a week.

Cajees must be an exception then, they have 8 stores therefore must be successful but i doubt any one rides.

I respect that the guys on here know alot more about cycling than what the guys in my store know. like i said it takes years of experience, not sitting learning in a class room. And i can take all the hits, its what im here for. im just trying to do the best i can with what i have. it will take time but my store will be a respected store. We arent a specialist shop, but my guys get by, and yes more aimed at the newbies, fair enough, but we are getting there, Fourways crossing specific and we only getting better. thanks for all the comments.

Best of luck with your venture DylanFH. I suppose the problem here is you are part of a big chain of shops. You can do your best but the other shops might just break it for you. I have posted in the other thread some time ago, I went into a SW a few months ago. The first time in many many years. Even though I think it is good that you are targeting the cycling market more aggresively with more service/products, but me living in Pretoria will not venture into SW very soon. Maybe you have success and it will expand to the other stores but I beleive it will take a lot of time.

I think to start with you will have to have very competitive prices on your products you sell. You propably will have the buying power to do that. If you can start selling your products and then offer the service to back it up you will do well. But what I have seen with my last visit to SW was that things were very expensive.

Won't buy from SW. Bought a polar there once and the woman behind the counter was clueless to such a degree that she handed me the watch to try to figure it out myself. WTH

Ha ha ja look like i said in another thread, if you want the proper service, ask for a specialist, they the guys with the different badges on, not just names, or the H.O.D. of that department or the manager. If its on the weekend most of the other staff are unfortunately flexi staff and dont have the product knowledge like our permanents have. But yeah i can understand your frustration. nothing worse than asking for help and the person helping you knows less than you. absolute abortion.

Just another corporate trying to cash in , looking at the margins and saying we can make good profits, SW is doing this purely for profit, no passion, I dont think cheap prices can replace knowledge passion and a love for the sport, SW wants your money, for them it a simple excirsize, if it fails they just say, nothing ventured nothing gained, we will put some more running shoes in the space, your LBS has to succeed, its their life, their livelyhood, their passion and their reason for being, your local supermarket will never serve you with the same passion and care as your local butcher, so their might be a place for SW in cycling, but for the serious and passionate cyclist their LBS will still be the best call

Well if you offer a good range of products at competitive prices then I will support you. Ny local bike shops are clueless anyway so my motivation is savings, I do my own homework. I also think most LBS's are only interested in you when you have wads of cash to fan around, which I don't have.

I have scored from from time to time is the "bargain table" at the Value Mall branch of SW. I have picked up some cool Park Tool and Pedro's stuff for next to nothing.

Ironically they don't even offer cheaper prices. Their internal slogan is "Premium products at premium prices"
