Hey guy's.

Im really keen to get my hands on a cheap-ish fixie, but cannot fiend any available. Would it be more advisable to convert a road bike?

There seems to bee a couple of bargains going in classifieds.

Track bike is the preferred frame, as it has no mounting for cables and such....basically it is smooth allround. Also no brake mounts

I bough an old Gazelle in near perfect condition to make a single speed...couldn't get myself to break it down

I ride a 54 (from what i can remember) Its been a long time since I've cycled.

I realize track bike would be preferred, but they seem to be quite scarce second hand. I don't mind the handy work converting a bike. It actually sounds like a fun winter project. Also, I have friends that are very handy with a spray gun, and the idea of a custom bike is very attractive at this moment ^_^

I have converted a road bike, not as 'clean' as a track frame and fiddly to get the right combination of chainwheel/rear 'sprocket' but works and was not expensive to do ...

NotSoBigBen, that is almost EXACTLY what I have in mind  that's a very nice bike bud.

If you don't mind me asking, what did this cost you to build? All that Ill do to this bike is fit a bull horn handle bar.

Mmmmm very little, was my old GT road frame ..... free painting by a mate ..... my son in law owns a bike shop ...... he built those wheels for me to my own spec (radial front, non drive on the rear radial, 2 cross drive)

54 is a small frame, but I have 2 that are about to go up in the classifieds if you're interested. Both Reynolds 531, both I'm guessing early to mid 70's. One is a RIH frame and fork, the other a Carlton frame only. Make me an offer I can't understand...

Thats a nice bike tedibear.

I dont know if the traditional old school frame is what i want. I had something more modern in mind. like this...

Maybe a used bike that needs some TLC. Ill smooth it out and paint it in the color I want. The simplicity of a fixie is what appeals to me. I couldn't be bothered with the whole hipster scene.

here are is some more motivation :)
