Lukep, for the driving you want to do, a second hand Suzuki SX4 is what you want. Really. Should be in the budget, smallish, but you are not going on four week Kalahari trips.

If you really have the money for these big SUV's, then go for it. I just don't see the pint. For the same money you can get a 5-10yr old Hilux/Land cruiser/Defender/Cherokee for next to nothing and a seriously nice, more powerful, more comfortable, more economical, better quality, better resale value car to use the 99% of the time you don't go offroad.

But maybe that's just me.

If you're looking at something in the Compass's class, I'd rather keep my eyes open for a 1-2yr old Hyundai iX35. Should be some good value there and likely a diesel.

Octavian, "My main offroad hassle with my Jeep Cherokee was that it had the most terrible clearance", "I would recommend atleast 250mm's. Anything less than that and you are looking for big trouble..." It's not quite as simple as that.

The two vehicles you see deepest into darkest African, Hilux D4-D and Cruiser 70-Series run 212mm and 230mm of clearance respectively. Lots of other factors to consider. Depending on wheels fitted, standard Cherokee is quite capable.

My plan would be to sell it with at least 1,5 years left on the maintince plan.

How do they hold value while still ocvered by maintince plan?

If you do not do a lot of km's this is ok. You may end up breaking even after 3 years, ie not have to pay in.

I'd trade the 3series for a X1. BMW will bend on the trade in as it would be one of their own coming back. With their attractive interest rates (I got offered 6%pa, fixed) you can afford to take a residual if you want to keep payments lower. The ride quality would be better and it would not be as thirsty as the Compass.

Like somebody already said , if you can't afford to drive (maintenance and fuel) a Jeep it's better to get the less capable Landrover or whatever else is out there .

I have had my Jeep compass for about 8 months now and really love it! I sold my X trail and have never looked back! the way i see it, if you getting a good price the resale wont hurt you as much. I have a very good jeep contact in CT that does my services etc cheaper than i could get with my X trail.

Checked out the IX35, nice car but the quality of the finishes and features are now where near as good as the Jeep, but I have also confirmed that the Jeep looses value really badly over a short time span. So it looks like my 3 series is going to be driven offroad for a little while longer.

The Suzuki grand vitara is an excellent little off-roader. I strongly encourage you to consider it.

Thanks good feedback.

I am looking at a low km 2nd hand 2011 model, so the car has already lost the value and it is priced R30k below the new price and has only 6900km's

The motor plan has been extended to 5 years 100 000kms so I would be well covered from a maintance perspective

The car I am looking at is the Jeep Compass 2l manual, the probelm is that if I comapre the specs of this car to the KIA this car has more features but is R70k less

The question is will a new KIA loose as much resale over time?

Also seems that the JEEP problems are on the Wrangler/RUBICON etc and the new Luxury SUV type cars are not as bad?

Comparing the 2 is a no brainier. But then also look at the IX 35. They seem to hold the resale value better than the Kias.
