New "silent" hub

I dunno. When I chase some riders down some single track and I am freewheeling and pumping terrain for speed, it leaves them confused as to how I am keeping up with them without pedalling.

Put nice and thick grease on the SEAL part dont put to thick grease on the pawls It might actually get between the working parts and cause the pawls to "skip"

 

Cant imagine having to rather listen to my chain going bezerk against my F-deraleur and chainstay than my GRRRRRRR of the Hope rear hub.. but hey. different fokes..

OF its a DT Swiss hub , A Little grease does the trick...

About 10 or 12 years ago or so, Shimano had a Silent Clutch option on their then STX groupset. The rear hub would spin with no noise, and would engage instantly when you start pedaling, and not have a bit of rotation before the hub kicks in.

I speak for myself again, not being familiar with newer hubs. You just clean it out with degreaser (i'm old-fashioned, as you know by now - paraffin, and you can re-use it after straining through a coffee filter paper), a whole lotta paper towels, and cotton buds.

 

I love a dead-quiet hub. Just the shish of tyres on the road, and the ability to creep up and wheelsuck other riders.

I recently too contemplated the merits of a quiet rear hub - hearing only the sound of my tires on the trail - and came across this purpose made hub. The price however quickly made me forget about it again..

I actually told the Lbs dude the other day that my Eastons are stukkend cause

the blarry hub doesnt make a noise. I genuinely thought they were faulty..ha ha DOF!!

I actually dig the noise, especially the ou's with the dik expensive wheels that make

that off beat rachety sound.

Now on the night rides though, I switch off my torch & then freewheel up to

the dude in front of me & scare the bajeeezus out of him. style!!

I also ride a giant 29 er with DT swiss rear hub. This weekend I stripped the hub and put more grease on the pawls. This has quitened the hub dramatically. Feels like a new bike now!
