Hi Guys,

Quick question. I bought Bontrager shoes the other day and used them pretty much for the first time on Sunday for a 30km race.

Needless to say, by the 20km mark I could barely pedal, as my left knee was so sore. I do have an old injury from last year, but then at the end of the race I felt both knees were very tender.

I spoke to a colleague yesterday and he suggested that it could be the cleats not being positioned correctly, or at the wrong angle. Could this be the case?

Like I said, I have never used shoes before and am not sure whether it's just my knees getting used to them or whether something is wrong.

Would appreciate any feedback or suggestions.

Thanks - So how must they sit? Do you adjust them to a certain angle?

.

They must sit in the natural position your feet would be at if you had no cleats , i.e. : some people walk ride pigeon toed ecdt , your cleats need to allow your feet to be in the same position , if you force them into a place you don't naturally ride you gonna hurt yourself .

go get setup

Which cleats/pedals are you using?

Shimano cleats and Ryder pedals... They were pedals left over so didn't bother buying another set.

I'd say it's the cleats. Could also need a shim inserted under the cleat to level things out. I had my bike set up by ergo fit and they sorted everything along with my bike and position.

I recently got new shoes and setup the cleats myself and same thing, on a training ride with in 15 minutes and had an annoying pain I'd never had before in my knee. Sorted it out by playing about and adjusting but took a few goes. My first mistake was to assume that both my feet were exactly the same for position and placing.

The cleats should have a little bit of natural 'float'. Cleats should be positioned on the ball of your foot.

I see you are in Bryanston. I will glady have a look for you if you want to pop over to Blairgowrie..

Do the pedals allow for float? Makes all the difference for me.

I don't know what "floating" is. All I know is that the pedals are really small :)

Allows your ankle to arc side to side because no one really pedals with their knees and ankles in a perfect linear circle.
