Hi Guys,

I was about to purchase some roof racks from VW so i can get a bike rack put on and they informed me that they make alot of noise when the car goes over a 100km. Anybody here got them on their Polo and can comment? And on that note, what the best bike carrier for a Polo if one doesn't have a tow bar?

I saw that Thule has quite a nice 'deflector' thing intended to reduce noise and fuel consumption ....

Thanks mate. ill have a look into that.

Its cheaper to fit a tow bar and buy a second hand tow bar mount bike carrier. I went for the Thule roof rack and bike carriers and cost a ton!! and make a lot of noise, even at 30km/hour. I think City Crash make the VW ones if I am not mistaken, had them on my old polo and where less noisy.

no worries, as long as you stay away from the ones that clip onto the vehicles boot, they end up damaging the paintwork after a while.

Thule has an Aerodynamically shaped roof rack model. The rack is shaped similar to an Aeroplane wing. This may be less noisy. Why don't yoou go for something like the rack in the picture attached?

Who makes this rack as pictured above?. I must also get a rack for my polo. This one looks pretty easy to use.

The type of bar used on the roofrack is what determines most of the noise. Square bars are very noisy. I'm using the Aero Whisper bars and don't have excessive noise.

I bought the wrong Thule footpack for my car, so you can buy them if you're keen. Just need an aerobar and a 591 and you're good to go. Paid R1450 for them, you can take them for R1000

Factory or VW approved towbar is going to cost a bit. Nessesary evil for you warranty.

From there a platform style carrier like the Menabo Winny is awesome.

Roofracks will actually be cheaper. Around R6500 with carriers from Thule.

Towbar alone could set you back that much. However fuel consumption and windnoise swings it to the towbar mount.
