While riding the other day I was thinking it may be beneficial for those who have experienced a bike jacking to share their stories so we can get an idea of the modus operandi of these thieves.

When riding alone (MTB) I tend to stay towards the middle of any jeeptrack so that anybody coming out the bushes would have to travel further and give me time to react. It was while doing this that I wondered whether they do hop out the bush or whether they approach strolling towards you before attacking. I presumed the latter but would like those who have experienced it to share their experiences.

I do know that uphills are meant to be more of a risk due to the slower speeds being travelled at. They apparently grab the back wheel resulting in your tumbling.

Please share and maybe it can help the rest of us. Thanks.

As a rule (if that applies) they operate in groups, are armed with either guns or knives and see you coming long before you see them. They are opportunistic petty criminals with potentail links to bigger syndicates but this has never been proved. They will wait along well known trails, paths, dirt roads for easy targets. Groups of 4 and even 6 have been victims.

Its not fun. Been jacked once and had 2 other close calls.

Good topic- I often ride mtb alone in JHB south, so any 'inside' info about how these bastards operate will be greatly welcomed...

To ride alone is to die alone !!!! I rode the same area alone for 10 years before I was hi-jacked there. IT'S NOT SAVE ON YOUR OWN !!!!!!

I stared a facebook group "Krugersdorp MTB" You post your training ride and MTB'ers in the same area can join in. We stared of with a hand full of people and now we are a 150 + MTB'ers .... Make a plan and start training in groups.

BTW, the demon that jacked me was just walking minding his own thing.... then.... all hell broke loose.

Long storie short.... I'm lucky to be alive today. All the GRORY to the KING !!!

I'd prefer not to ride with 150 other people. Not sure why we are giving "grory" to a king but if that is how you avoid bike jackings then I'm all for it (although it never seemed to work for you).

3 dump f&@kers tried to bike jack me on the 31/12/2011, happy to say they failed, was stupod of me to ride through Dunoon, was dump of these three BEE candidate to trie and bike jack some dumb 85 kg dutchman(3 * 60kg little youths) when he has been pedalling into the wind for 3 hrs and is late to meet his wife and kids on the beach. Maybe the headache from having their heads kicked in has ended

You must be a Ninja.

In the perfect world this might work, but in the real world they ambush you.

You know exactly what he meant.

Also no need to diss what was said and insult his beliefs.

I was contemplating riding the spruit alone on the weekend. How safe is it? I know dudes live there but have ridden it a few times. Any bad experiences?

From Fratelies to emmarentia its cool. I ride that part alone most of the time. I've heard that the 'bottom' part there by some pick and pay is sketchy.
