Don't be fooled , unless you can get over that mountain pass while it is still light you gonna find it very technical on the decent with your little light . Hitting sand in the dark at speed can also be a new experience for you . I also did not encounter the cows but did have a few rabbits and scorpions cross the road . Support vehicle is overrated and I would prefer to do the race unsupported if ever I decide to do it again .
sias Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Hey Dirt-Rider - The first 160km is now unsupported for the solo's. I always try to get off the mountain before sunset, but if you've got a good set of lights, you should be fine.
dirtrider Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 When I did the solo many,many years ago there was only 8 entries . 5 of us stuck together up to the 2nd check point and most went over the pass in the dark . I had the best lights you could buy in those days and found the going down the other side very scary , but then I suppose if you do use your brakes it should be a lot easier .
sias Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Yeah, those 50 lumen lights were the business back then! I used a 200 lumen light last year on stage 3 and thought it to be enough. The missus gave me a Magiclight 880 with 2000 lumens and my goodness, what a difference!45 spots left for the solo...
