My SRAM PG980 cassette is just over 3 months old. I fitted a new chain yesterday after destroying my old chain trying to convert to single-speed (broken deralieur during race) and now the new chain slips on the cassette. Seems the cassette is too worn to accept the new chain.

I don't ride much - maybe 40 to 50km a week if I'm lucky, and I clean my drive train thoroughly every weekend.

Is this normal wear?

It should last longer - about 1500km depending on the riding conditions - I lost one after 400km on summer.

I prefer Shimano`s cassettes but sram chains seem to do better.

Sometimes its just bad luck.

your riding style and conditions will affect wear too...do you cross-chain a lot?

no. very aware of keeping chain straight as possible.

Also prefer Shimano cassettes and SRAM chains, not sure if its me but there seems to be less noise from them?

Last SRAM cassette gave me well over 2000km though (as do the chains)

My Sram PG990 lasts for over 1000km with me now. Not too sure how many km's on it before I got it. I use Shimano LX chains. Had a sram hollow pin chain on there that broke quite easily & resulted in my almost hitting myself in the sack with the handle bar

I have done more than 4000km on a XX 10 speed cassette, I also cross chain all the time (2 x 10 setup) but I replace my chains after 800km

The cassette is still going strong...

Normally as the chain stretches it will cause friction on the casette which will cause the casette's grooves to chance accordingly. So if you change the chain on eg < 1000kms the casette would be fine but if you change the chain on 3000kms you'll probably need to change the casette as well. The same happened to me a year or so ago on my XX after 4000kms on the same casette and chain so I first replaced the chain and then realised that I have to change the casette as well.

How much does a chain cost? This can be expensive for me at the rate (km) I ride! To me it means a new chain every 2-3 months! And they said having a new bike will cut the maintenance costs!

3 months is about correct. A chain costs R300, a top end cassette costs +R1500. Well worth using multiple chains on one cassette. I use lots of chains and ride 3 bikes, thus the 3 months moves to about 8.

Ok not that bad then. It calculates to less than a R100.00 per month. And for the fun I am having it is cheap. :)
