No tears for chainsaw killer

The grisly death of the man who beheaded his husky pup with a chainsaw sparked an outpouring of vitriol on Tuesday.

Phillip Matthysen died at about 4am on Sunday when he rolled his black Toyota Land Cruiser on the R50 near Rietfontein.

The 31-year-old caused a national outcry earlier in 2006 when he hacked the head off his four-month old Siberian husky after the dog had killed his parrot.

The Delmas magistrate's court in July convicted him of cruelty to animals after he pleaded guilty. During the trial, animal rights activists in the public gallery wept when a vet's report on the decapitation of the husky was read out in court.

But, whatever the private grief of his family and friends, the news of his death caused no public sorrow on Tuesday.

Joanne van Niekerk of the Husky Rescue Society described the death as "justice served from a higher plane".

"My phone has not stopped ringing since the early hours of this morning and I can honestly say that nobody was saying 'What a shame'," she said.

"We respect the fact Mr Matthysen had a family and they are now in mourning, but we can only hope that he went far more quickly and did not go through the same agony his little husky endured."

Her colleague Wendy Burrows said: "Justice has ultimately been served by a better magistrate than the one who presided over this case."

Matthysen was fined R10 000 (or 12 months' jail time) suspended for five years. It was also ruled that he could never again own a husky, but that he could keep his other dogs. Matthysen was also ordered to pay R5 000 to the Springs SPCA.

At the the time of his trial, animal rights activists held nothing back in making their fury known.

One foreboding message posted on the Internet read: "An old tale states that huskies are guardians of heaven's gates. If you treat them cruelly, they will come back and haunt you. I hope this innocent dog growls at him (Matthysen) and sends him to hell when he attempts to pass through the gate. Karma is a BITCH Phillip you will get what you deserve!"

Another person wrote: "If you know him spit on him."

That site was updated on Tuesday with a message to bloggers urging them to calm their responses in light of Matthysen's death.

Talk Radio 702 was flooded with calls from early on Tuesday. The overwhelming majority expressed no sympathy and most callers said the death was a just retribution.

Many talked about karma, or fate, and said his action had brought about his death.

One caller said: "Every dog has its day."

According to Van Niekerk, the Husky Rescue Society has found homes for Matthysen's animals but was waiting for the SPCA and Matthysen's family for permission to go ahead and place them.

She said the male Great Dane that had been taken in for medical treatment after it was found roaming Matthysen's property with open, untended wounds was due to be returned home on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Superintendent Eugene Opperman said Matthysen had been travelling alone when he was thrown out of the car and killed.

"We understand there were no witnesses or any other vehicles involved," Opperman said, adding that reports that Matthysen may have been swerving to avoid hitting a dog were groundless.

It is understood that while the accident happened at about 4am, paramedics were summoned only at 7am. They found Matthysen lying dead at the scene.

Paramedic Prince Mbiza told Beeld that he appeared to have died of serious head injuries.

I would have had sympathy less anger if he did indeed eat the dogs and claimed he was starving.

I can guarantee you that this guy will be in the papers for rape or murder in the next 5 years.

All he gets is a warning

People who can't respect a animal, can't respect other people.

I am also pretty sure that he was abused as a kid.....abuse and this kind of behaviour go hand in hand.

This is what FBI profiler Robert Ressler says about animal abusers

Animal abuse is not just the result of a minor personality flaw in the abuser—it is a symptom of a deep mental disturbance. Research in psychology and criminology shows that people who commit acts of cruelty toward animals rarely stop there; many of them move on to their fellow humans.

The FBI has found that a history of cruelty to animals is one of the traits that regularly appear in its computer records of serial rapists and murderers. The standard diagnostic and treatment manual for psychiatric and emotional disorders lists cruelty to animals as a diagnostic criterion for conduct disorders.
