My fellow pool swimmers,

It seems like the pool chlorine is drying out my nasal cavities which leaves them sore and very dry.

I tried rinsing with a salt water solution, but it doesn't help.

Have you had a similar experience or know someone who did? If so, do you know of a remedy?

Have not come across this problem before, what about trying to apply a cream or lubrication to act as a barrier i.e. vaseline?

Have the same issue when I train for the Midmar in the pool. Try using a strong vitamin C supplement (500mg or stronger) and spray with a nasal homeopathic allergy solution before and after your swim. Some people have a chlorine allergy which has more or less the same symptoms.

I swam for 12 years, 6 hrs a day in Chlorine pools.

Some advice: Ask when they do the chemical treatments on the pools, then stay away from the pool for a couple hours after the treatments. This has then single biggest effect.

Otherwise, your body take some time to build up thicker mucous barriers, and some of the off-the-shelf nasal sprays help moisten up afterwards.

Are you wearing a nose plug?

In chlorine pools I have to wear a nose plug or I have problems breathing. I sound like I'm asthmatic when it happens. My nasal cavities hurt too, although I never associated it with a dry nose.

The nose plug helps a lot, but it's not perfect. It doesn't help me for backstroke. Possibly the plug isn't good enough. I find the plug uncomfortable, but it's better than the alternative.

I don't need or use nose plugs in open water, or pools with a more sensible amount of chlorine.

Fortunately I dont suffer from this. But there are a couple of my friends who get this from swimming in open water etc.

But I use a colloidal silver spray for cleaning my nasal cavities after a swim in open water or MTB etc. good to keep crap out of your nasal and throat passages in general.

I will check my stuff and the supplier and will pm u-otherwise Dischem has colloidal silver products as well.

Wow thats a lot of swimming.

Agree 100% about the chlorine treatment time, used to swim at a gym first thing in the morning when they opened at 5am and developed a serious cough for the rest of the day after each swimming session. Only used to happen when swimming in this particular pool. One night just before closing time I saw a gym employee adding what seemed like massive amounts of chlorine just before switching everything off and pulling the pool cover over the pool. When I spoke to him he confirmed this was standard procedure every evening. Our coach started checking the water every morning and he confirmed that the chlorine content was way too high. When we spoke to the pool management they said it was necessary to ensure that the water was bug free…LOL never mind that it was poisoning the early morning swimmers…

Thanks All,

I'll give the nose plug a go.

How do you breathe when you're swimming? i.e. do you breathe in through your nose while you're swimming or in through your mouth?

I only swim freestyle - so nose breathing is a no-no

Must say I struggle with my nose as well. As soon as swimming season kicks in I start sneezing and get nose runs all day. My problem has just steadily gotten worse over the last year. I have a nose plug but never wear the damn thing. I will try it ....
