I have a scott scale 60 mtb hanging in the garage (complete)

and it's gonna change to SS.

 

It will be a project, and depending on time/money i will upgrade as i go along.

 

in order of importance the following will happen:

 

Drivetrain (obviously)

Bar, Headset and stem

Brakes

Front suspension/lack thereof.

 

First Question:

 

Will it make sense for me to try out a second-hand spacer/tensioner setup? how available are these (browsed the classifieds and not much there..) should i just splash out on complete new set?

Get the Gusset Bachelor tensioner and Gusset spacer and cog kit from CRC.

Cheap as chips and works a treat.

Second hand tensioner sets are rather rare to find second hand, buy a new tensioner and break up an old cassette for spacers. I would get a proper SS rear cog though!

 

I have a second hand, hardly used tensioner at home, but the chances of me letting this go is zero.

I have a 18T cog and spacer kit for a 9spd hub. Will happily do the conversion for you.

 

You can use your derailleur as a tensioner for a start.

I got an SS conversion kit from diald.. was like 350 (price has gone up a bit) for spacers, cog and tensioner.. And they look flippin sweet!!!!

The chain on the Scott is tanked, so when I get a chain, would I require a SS chain when doing a conversion, or will a standard chain be fine?

The DMR kit states in the info that a standard chain is better.

With the advent of SSWC (which i did not attend) i have been unable to find any SS comonents whatsoever.

 

been frustrating.

 

But i have been promised that Mr Usher will do his rounds to the various bike shops today, and hopefully i will be able to have all the bits and pieces today.

 

Last night was spent stripping all unwanted components from the Scott.

 

Will take some pics and post if i get lucky today.

Standard chain is better when doing a conversion, normally 5-8 speed will do fine.

Manage to get all my goodies on friday, only managed to get to the assembly on saturday after van gaalens.

 

New chain from cageys on sunday morning, and my first 25km on sunday afternoon. (would have been a 30km, but got a puncture.)

 

Fire Eye tensioner.

Gusset 34t front

16 at the back.

 

managed an average of 20km/h for the 25km's before the puncture.

 

Looking forward to some delta laps on wednesday eve.

I am just starting my SS project.

 

Got a Giant XTC frame and a Rockshox Duke fork. I have stripped the frame down to bare alu this weekend (Original paintwork was shot, but frame is 100%), It looks fantastic with the original brushed alu look. Now not sure what to do with it now...... The fork has also been stripped and ready for a respray. Waiting for some goodies from CRC to finish off the build. Really excited to get out there and try this SS thing.
