Even the locals pull a faces when you mention 29ers. There's also bike shops on every other corner. Hardly any bikes for sale with less than 160mm travel. These shops are like the total opposite of SA shops. 5.10s, full faces, wide bars, body armour and things along those lines are all available in abundance. I love it. As for the XCO... I've got some of the best riding in the world here, it only gets dark 9pm... So no...
