Ever wondered how the Argus and the Jock Cycle Classique compares to the TdF?

I have a T shirt I love to wear. It has the Jock profile superimposed over the Argus profile (as OP posted). The caption says "So you've done the Argus, what about the real thing"

Love to wear it to the Argus Expo. Riles a couple of weathers, but I do get a couple of knowing smiles also.

It is a brilliant ride. I wasn't particularly fit (by my standards back then) when I did it so I just rode easy within myself and finished in a shade over 5 hours.

 

Some memories:

 

- 42 x 21 was the easiest gear in a 8 speed ratio. It was hard work up Boulders but we didn't know any better...

 

- Boulders climb is looooong. Suikerbossie gradient but 3 or 4 times longer and you have no idea where the summit is. Just many switchbacks through a tunnel of trees.

 

- It was below zero at the start and nearly 40 a few hours later going up Boulders. No breeze through the dense vegetation on the steep climb. That can fatigue you like nothing else.

 

- Stopping between stages absolutely kills the legs. All the cement pills you took to get up the climbs in stage 1 and 2 will settle in your quads in stage 3. It really feels like there are only one or two muscle fibres left in your legs to attempt to turn the pedals.

 

- On the last stage, with a km to go, I passed a girl I knew who was crying because her legs were in such severe cramp. I think she was 3rd lady home.

Hmm, yeah, also done the Jock three times, first time I swore blind never again, second time I swore at myself for been so stupid to enter again and I swore never again, third time I swore at my mate for getting me to enter, then I swore at myself for been so dumb as to listen and then I said "thats it" this will be the last...........!

 

I'll see next year.!

jock comes in winter and we smack it with no training, TDF is in summer. so jock is harder:)
