So I'm not sure as to the general rule here. Was riding along some jeep track this morning when I got caught from behind by two guys. After putting in an effort to stay with them I thought it the right thing to have my turn at the front. I did so but when I looked back they were no longer on my wheel. Am I meant to sit up and wait or assume that they couldnt/didnt want to stick with me?

Bunch riding rules on the jeep track? Good grief, what is mountainbiking coming to? :D

I recommend you get off the jeep track and onto some single track. ;) Here are my rules:

1. You amble along looking like you are in no hurry while it is flat or easy.

2. When it turns seriously uphill, you put the hammer down and leave them all for dead. Or you ride behind them and have a calm conversation with them while they are near puking their lungs up and incapable of uttering a word.

3. If it turns downhill and very gnarly, you simply make sure you are in front and again leave them for dead. At the bottom of the hill you then stop to wait, when they arrive, you strike a pose that convey a mild boredom with having to wait so long.

......shall I carry on, or does it start to become clear now? Feel free to improvise!

Road bunch riding rules generally dont apply to MTB. Safety is an issue as you can see obstacles whilst wheelsucking. Unless you introduce yourself and ask to join in their ride, dont be surprised when they have vanished on their own planned route.

IMHO... Don't lurk on someone elses ride. I would hate some random plonker trying to prove his worth riding with me. Rather be polite, start a convo and take it from there. If they don't want you then they'll vanish. No hard feelings.

I am with you on this. I hate it when out riding with a buddy and all of a sudden there is a ghost on your wheel just hanging there saying nothing. It is like walking into a retaurant and joining people you dont know at their table

Good example.

Ask whether you can join, always.
