So I have had my new mtb for just over a month now, clocked just over 1000km and now all of a sudden my chain starts "jumping" on my lowest 2 gears- especially when I put heavy "pressure" on them. A mate of mine suggested that it might be the cables that have stretched (or as Johan B would say- the housing that has worn). It only happens in these two gears irrespective whether I am on the Big, middel or small blade in front.

What do you think? And how can I correct this?

Thanx

As with everything on the bike there is a short period of settling on the components. The store you bought the bike from should offer a free 1 month service to correct this for you.

On a new bike I would first check the cable, they do tend to stretch a little when they new.

what he said, simple chain stretch. you can try tighten it up with the barrel adjusters a bit but the tech savvy guys will give you good advice just hang on a few

Cool, I did receive a free service when I purchased the bike. I tried adjusting the barrel, but that did not work. I am however reluctant to take my bike in for a service as I would not be able to cycle for 2 days :-( So I thought if some expert here on the hub can guide me what to do I could just do it myself.

RL, I had exactly the same problem with my MTB about 3 weeks ago. Also only in the 2 lowest gears and also only under pressure.. i.e. riding up a hill.

I had the cables and gears checked out as my chain and cassette are fairly new. Then out on a ride my chain snapped... it appears that their was one dodgy link that was 'pulling apart'. Anyhow, 1 new chain later and all of the jumping has stopped. I would suggest checking every link and removing the offending one :)

Has happened to me twice chain jumping, followed by chain break. Agree to check each link and will prob find one link coming off the pin. If it is not too bad can fix with tool, else remove the bad link. Cheaper than buying a new chain and can ride no problem after fixing.
