Could this be the end of Chappies for us?

Many years ago one had to license your bicycle at the post office, and you would receive a metal disc I think. This was when I was very small before I had my first bike, so dont know the ins outs about mayeb someone here does

clap.gif clap.gifclap.gif glad I am not the only who remembers this...... was done before and could be done in the future. Anyway it would be an excellent stream of taxation for the continued renovations to Nkandla.ph34r.png Maybe I should pitch the idea to JZ???

I agree with you 110% as all road users from Bikes to Trucks should be licensed and transgressors should be prosecuted for breaking the rules. When there is no recourse against breaking the rules then the rules will continue to be broken. Yes its an inconvenience, but it will save lives.

It used to be that you had to buy a licence disc every year from the municipality and attach it to your bike if you wanted to ride on the road, so it won't be a new thing. When I was a kid our bikes sometimes got checked while they were parked in the bike racks at school. I think eventually it was dropped along with dog licences because it cost more to administer than they ever made out of it or out of fines. But, perhaps the control that it offered was valuable?

Cyclists should pay licences for road use and it should be compulsary to have a identifyable number plate. It would make many a ignoramus think twice before behaving badly.

I would be quite happy to pay a license fee like most cyclist - just the thing is these fees are work out on the weight of the vehicle and thus cost way more to implement for bicycles as apposed to the revenue collect.

As my profile pic say - we (cyclist) don't take our live into our own hands- we put them in your (motorist)!

Cyclist do not need to be educated in any form to ride on roads in RSA in fact I don't think their is a specified minimum age as to when you may ride on a public road - so parents out their trust motorist to adhere to the road and not just drive over their kids - and actually thats what the law more or less states. Yup RSA is the only country in the world we have a law you are obliged to cycle single file - a law which is been challenged by many parties.

I still don't know why and as this is about Chapmans Peak when I am riding with my friend(s) and going the speed limit why I should ride single files. Added to that any car over taking would be breaking the speed limit - crossing the centre solid line (even if I was single and they did not even give me 700cm let alone 1.5m). Not to mention not having a clear un interrupted view of the road ahead.

Driver who are supposably educated to be able to drive - just continually break the laws they are meant to be educated in - but their is no enforcement of the laws!

Please add to the list - What laws do:

Pedestrians break?

J walking

often step into the road before looking left / right and left again

Sometimes been on road they should not be on - Freeways

Cyclist?

Riding 2 abreast

going through red traffic lights

Sometimes speeding

Sometimes been on road they should not be on - Freeways

To the above who is likely to get physically injured if the cyclist or pedestrian / has causes an accident - the motorist - I think not!

Motorist?

Speeding

Parking incorrectly

Not over taking correctly according to road making or what they have pass a drivers license on (possibly about 8 different laws could be broken just on this item)

going through red traffic light

I am sure you guys can add quite a few more to the list - this si what google says about overtaking:

overtaking check list

Remember, to overtake safely you must:

• Have a clear uninterrupted view of the road ahead.

• Check rear-view mirrors and clear blind spots.

• Signal your intentions before and after overtaking.

• Not exceed the posted speed limit.

When you must not overtake

You must not overtake another vehicle when:

• It is stopping or has stopped at a pedestrian or

children’s crossing.

• It has stopped at an intersection (unless the driver signals that they

are turning left or right and it is safe to do so).

• There is a ‘NO OVERTAKING’ or ‘NO PASSING’ sign.

• You are nearing a blind bend or the crest of a hill or you do not have

a good view of the road ahead.

• The road is marked with a dividing line comprising two continuous

lines; a continuous line on the left of a broken or dotted line; or a

single continuous line.

WTF?? cursing.gif FFS I give up......

Mike, I think he just states that that it the status quo in SA law, but means that it is absurd and that cyclists should be educated like all other road users.

I recall our school doing a few lessons on road rules way back when, perhaps start there?

OK cool, if thats what he meant and that statement wasn't his own opinion, then its my misunderstanding of his post. I find it strange that some vehicles using roads are licenced and some are not but both are subject to the same / similar rules and regulations. That doesnt make sense. Anyway, WE have to be responsible for our own behaviour on the road and not pass the blame for attitudes and perceptions of cyclists.

couple of things need to happen in my humble opinion,

Bring back the cycling and pedestrian saftey program. During which you have to write an exam sort of like a "drivers license test" Once you pass you have to register your bike at the municipality and you get your little registration tag like we had when we were kids. Then the police should activly enforce the laws of cycling on the roads, since you have a registration tag it would be easy to fine the cyclist once he is pulled over.

Hell i remember i got my first "fine" for running a red robot on my bomber age 7, and i say "fine" because the cops gave my dad an option bliksem die donner of betaal n R50 fine.

Needless to say which one daddy chose, however I am of the opinion that the only way south african's learn is if it hits their wallets,

You make me feel young (only been a road rider for 30 years) - I don't remember this program - but does sound like a great idea!

@icycling, As a motorist I dont have a problem with guys riding abreast, however as a motorist, wether speeding or not and you are faster than the guys infront of you in they are supposed to move over to let you pass. Why cant cyclist do this to let cars pass, it is that simple, make room let the car pass, instead cyclist dont wanna budge they want to block the road.

snip snip

Lisence fee is arbitary but someone needs to pay for the administration, a NUMBER PLATE that can identify the transgressor is the important issue....... or maybe a aerodynamic one made of Carbon Fibre as Coooofie said.
