Saw your post at http://www.2oceansvibe.com/cyclists-red-lights.htm and

thought I should give my opinion, as a motorist and as a cyclist (and a

scooterist).

Yes, its illegal to ride through red traffic lights. Yes, most any cyclist

confronted about it whilst riding is likely to look at you funny. Yes, it

might give some kids the wrong impression.

But. A very big but. Wake up! Do you not also see taxi's running red lights

almost daily? Do you not see cars stopping over the pedestrian lines at

traffic lights (also illegal)? Do you not see motorists exceeding the speed

limit nearly every day, possibly more exceeding it than obeying it??

Realise that the majority of cyclists are also motorists. As cyclists we

practice the same respect for the law that we do as motorists, and its very

simple: (1) Do I feel safe breaking the law in the manner I'm doing, and

(2) do I feel I'm going to be caught by someone who could slap me with a

fine?

On (1): Mostly yes, although some cyclists (and motorists) definition of

safe is questionable, or in some cases down-right stupid. On (2): Not a

chance - law enforcement? Don't be silly!

So get off your high-horse and put your "who the f**k" attitude back where

it came from. These people (cyclists) don\'t treat the traffic laws the  way

they do because they're cyclists, they do it because its the way we (South

Africans) respect the traffic laws. Idiot motorists on a bicycle become

idiot cyclists. The bicycle doesn't make them the idiot.

And yes, I will run a red light when I think it is safe to do so (usually a

T-junction), and yes I exceed the speed limit in my car when I think it is

safe to do so (usually empty roads).

And what will the kids think of your poor language?

And his response:

Hey Nick.

Enjoyed your comments.

Good argument.

Thanks for the support.

One day michelle is gonna start a sad topic with your name mentioned in the contents and guess who's not gonna have any sympathy.

PS. I'm leaving the smiley face of this one on purpose.
...yup and at least I'll go doing something I love...cycling... and guess what? A traffic light won't be the cause, it will be some taxi or whatever that did 180kph in the yellow lane.

I've been knocked off my bike before and that at 17:30 while in the yellow lane, all the lady said was... Eish I never saw you master, the sun, she was in my eyes Ouch
I never denied it.  I said we went through the lights' date=' but I am ashamed we did.

I usually try to stop at the lights on my commute and my mates know I am going to stop (even if they don't!), so it ends up being a traffic lightr sprint to catch up, but it makes me stronger.

Like I said, we are in the wrong, but unable to accept it or change our behaviour.
