PPA vs Cyclelab hosting the league in CPT?

the spring league was in doubt for some time and was organised by the ppa & wpca. entries were down on previous years - no stars in training and the vets, masters and women numbers are also drastically down.

entry fees were reduced so it will be interesting to see the final income vs expenses.

the biggest expenses go towards making your racing as safe as possible:

officials, police, think bike, ambulance,Racetec, toilets don't come cheap when they need to be hired for a stand alone event like the league events at Paardeberg,Red Hill climb and Atlantis.

no-one at the PPA/WPCA was paid to be organisers and marshals.

any profit won't be given to a charity or paid out in salaries or put into anyone's pocket but will be ploughed back into cycling.

don't even mention a loss situation.

league wasn't perfect by all accounts, i'll be the first to admit it, any constructive critiscim (spelling) will be welcome.

CL wanted 150 000 to run a National Pro Classic series...not for a local league.

Just hope MTB_Roadie's LBS is supporting racing in the Western Cape wink.png

That is not the point, 150k for a national event and they still take the income proceeds of registration....sounds like ripoff to me....do the maths...they dont even give proper money, they gave me a flippen voucher for a 3rd place last season, no thank you.....so R150000 + Entry fee's...so rather than promoting cycling they are thinking of their pockets....anyway....Aca Joe sponsored as well so not really sure why Cycle Lab want 150k to organise like 13 races during the whole year? I support my LBS because he does not rip me off.

And that is exactly the reason I pay my PPA fee's, league fees, etc to PPA, because they build cycling.....and try improve it.

i ran the winter league for the WPCA , charged R70 for seniors and R50 for lighties, paid prize money (not a lot but it was cash and not gift vouchers), never had more than a 100 riders and made a small profit of r1k±

The entry fee:

PPA make no profit, this is what it costs for marshalls, commisaires, timing, thinkbike, etc etc... especially after PPA added a race when TDW was cancelled, they could have not done so as running it stand alone cost extra money which we as riders did not chip in more for, that was a straight up loss.

Timing: I'm sure will be streamlined in future.

exactly why I'm suggesting go back to having 5-7 PPA fun rides(tdw, wce, durbanville hs, etc) as part of the league then there is no additional costs for timing, marshals, toilets, etc, etc?

I think, if you don't mind, should run the spring & summer Leagues as well as it sounds like you are the only one who has the riders interest at heart.

PPA made no profit! I cannot say weather this is true or false at this stage - I have seen budgets where PPA would have made a small profit and like wise I has seen budgets where PPA would have made a lose.

But what I can say for sure is when I asked PPA to put R50 000 towards the series (to make it better) it was denied - yet PPA spend R220 000 on unit trust every month! I will be posting a poll on PPA and their funding allocation / model later today - just been hectic day!

Interesting reading these comments. When i rode elites somes 20 years ago it was exactly the same as what i am reading here today. it would make more sence then of combining league into the longer distance fun rides as someone mentioned already. How much do you guys pay for each race as a matter of interest?

Do you want me to get old early???

@ ccc2

Will there be a Summa League will all these financial challenges?

Hope so...

the challenge for the ppa is to have a summer calendar - there are issues wrt races over OKW and Boyes Drive.

the ppa are losing funrides on the calendar and they don't look like they are attracting new events. i wanted klein joostenberg funride as an additional league race but was denied so the organiser pulled out completely.

@zilla,

Will there be a Summer League?

Can you say?

I know sponsorship challenges can turn things upside down.

There will only be a league if we as riders criticize constructively and support the racing no matter what. Then Yes, completely.

@ everyone: Quit whinging about the entry fees - they are what they are, everything is expensive - we have the best league in the country and this produces the best riders. it would suck race as A group, B group...

Zilla and/or ccc2,

Does the number of subscription to League determine whether it's a go-ahead or not?

If so, what is a feasible number?

[Obviously, the perception of season race fees determine who puts their money down.]

i think the break even figure was 287, the wpca gave league the go ahead when it was around 150 because if a season is missed becos of low numbers then it will be so much harder to regain lost riders.
