Hello. Is this seperate from the moonlight mass on Monday the 29th?? i.e. Monday is still happeneing too.

I cannot make Friday (BANF Mountain Film Festival), but would like to know more about the Monday night ride. Anyone have more info?

And friday night at 6pm in the city is quiet enough on the roads not to cause serious altercation between the various road users?? How many people are you expecting?

Firstly, that's sort of the point, or at very least to make the bicycle seen and appreciated. Secondly, not too many, between 20 and 40 hopefully, but really who knows.

Not too sure about your thinking here. Friday at that time there are people rushing to get to aftercare services that close around then to pick up their kids after a days work. Others will have family engagements and possibly got held up trying to finish off a deadline for this week at work. These people are not going to appreciate 1 let alone 40 cyclists trying to ride all over the road to make a point. I wont be joining you chaps if you are purposefully looking to interfere with traffic that close to office hours. People plan their days around schedules that include this time. They certainly don't plan for a group of 40 people trying to claim their space on the road. That's why Moonlight Mass has been so successful. With all that's happened with the Kalk Bay bus accident and the noise that's made I don't think you guys are doing the right thing. If you want to claim your space the first thing I would do is arrange a flash mob on bicycles to protest outside a Golden Arrow bus depot!

Hi Tube, 6pm on a Friday the city is nearly empty.

The Critical Mass has been running for many years now (the am ride that is) and the pm ride is a new introduction as of late.

Bicycles should be allowed free reign on the roads any time of the day or night without being a target or have to deal with motorists who feel they have more rights than us.

I day the above with the mindset that when using the roads on obeys the rules of the road.

Yep, guilty of jumping to too many conclusions. Thanks for confirming Hairy! The Kalk Bay thing is just very close to home and keen to make sure that we as cyclists are not giving the authorities another reason to ignore our pleas.

Good luck with critical mass tonight ladies and gents!

So are there two critical mass rides now, or two people organising different ones with the same routes? The one thing I do know is that the guy who started it would definitely not be keen on a facebook page(he hates it).

Thanks for the input. Yes, CM has been going for about 4 years in CT and has been going for roughly 20 years (http://www.bicyclecapetown.org/2012/09/critical-mass-turns-20th-years-old/) around the world. It started in the morning (and still goes in the morning). But that's often inconvenient for people (as much as 18:00 is inconvenient for others). 18:00 is pretty much standard around the world, so that's why it was chosen here.

There will always be an excuse for not riding (Golden Arrow, rain, too early, too late, not enough people, dangerous roads, too many people (moonlight mass)...), so come, meet some people, have a drink, or don't.

Regarding the Golden Arrow bus thing (horrible, horrible, horrible), would you and your cyclist buddies be interested in donating a bike to create a ghost bike memorial (http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2011/nov/10/ghost-bikes-memorials-cycling-victims)? Thinking about doing a collection tonight at CM to get it done, just wondering about the practicalities.
