I've not read this whole thread but in case no one has ID the snake it is a juvenile molesnake. I caught a similar sized and coloured on in the same area some months back.

Crisis so no one knows what it is but one of you got it caught in your chain and another one of you is holding it... sounds like the start to a bad joke.

In KZN we have an issue with Black Mambas, we ride in a lot of sugar cane and well, we are not really that welcome in the cane. There have already been a few incidents this year.

What? A snake in the hand is worth more than two on a bike! Oh never mind.

Yeah, out of all snakes you can encounter while riding, the black mamba is the one I worry about the most.

You got it before me

Snake is a mole snake

Owl is a grass owl. ( they nest on the ground in thick grass and must have been spooked as the cyclist came past. The sad thing is he was probably nesting at the time)

Me thinks you need to see how brave you are and use a potting spade next time you plan to chop off a snakes head. whistling.gif

That handle is way to short on that spade, a lot can still go wrong

Very cool.

So where should we not ride?

Contermanskloof I believe. Lots of snakes on the Tygerberg MTB trails at the moment. My wife and I encountered a massive Cape Cobra at Hoogekraal two weeks ago. Not lekka on that narrow single track where you can't see far in front of you - literally encounter each other at speed!!

Froze. Saw the bugger crossing the trail about 6 meters in front of us. Waited for it to cross and disappear into the bush. Cycled past that spot very fast. My wife was in front when she saw the snake. I had to take the lead after that.
