And i guess hadlebar width is just a personal preference? What do the commuters prefer?

There is some science to it as well, but I'm not up to speed with it.

'some' of what I've hear: road bars = shoulder (from edge of bony top to other) + 2cm. 26" wider, and 29" even more.

I was looking at 34-16. With some training you will get up the inclines on the 94.7, may possibly spin out on some of the M1 sections.

 

I did the 94.7 in 2010 on a 26" mtb with slicks, geared 44x18. Was mostly perfect.

did argus in 2010 on my fixie.

gear was 48x18, and obviously 700cc tyres.

 

I handled it ok, but gear was still a tad too short. I didn't really have problems on the hills going up, but coming down is a bitch sometimes when youre flying with eggbeaters and okes just freewheel past(yup, that stretch from cape point to the cape farmhouse for one!) - this wouldn't be a problem with a ss. If doing it again i would go with 48x17 that i currently am riding with.

 

otherwise go for it, never a problem getting substitutions.

Are you talking Argus roadie or MTB race? If it's the roadie, you'll die of frustration on 32x16. It's shorter than the shortest gear on most road bikes. For my money, I'd go at least 42 x 16. You'll need a bit of grunt to get over the hills, but the climbs on the Argus aren't that serious anyway.

 

If you're talking MTB Argus, 32x18 would be my pick (26" wheel). A decent balance of climbing ability vs top end.

A note then ... on a 29'er the 32x18t becomes a 32x21t ratio.
