So how do you insure bikes? I am currently with Cyclesure and looking to change. What insurance companies other than outsurance and Miway insure your bikes without having to move your household and car etc. I am very happy with my latter insurance company but they don't do bicycles over R20k

need to ask for a quote to check on the premium and excess

santam....as specified items under household...pay next to nothing but it is not all risk....they will only pay out if stolen from my lockup garage or if damaged while under my roof. As soon as I leave the property I am taking the risk wrt to everything.

Mine are insured under the normal household insurance, as listed items and they DO have all risk associated with them. If I break one, or it gets stolen / jacked - I am covered at full replacement cost.

@ Rouxtjie - it may be worth your while getting "all risks" added to your policy. For mine it was an extra R 50 per month.

Current insurance is a crazy cost. Already got one from miway and it is 100 cheaper than my current cyclesure.

Yea i hear you gords, it got to a point where I just couldn't justify it anymore(480 zars a month). Phoned them up and cancelled my policy on the zula and have been putting away that money in a call account every month...my bike fund so to speak so when I need to replace something I dip into there and have built up a nice amount over the last 2 years. I will use that for my new bike if and when I feel like it. The thing that got to me is people that proudly admit to screwing the insurance companies to get payouts on new cranks..new frames...new whatever knowing that me the honest bloke is indirectly sponsering them these new things through the big premiums every month. It is a roll of the dice...yes but works much better for me...for various reasons.

This exactly! Think of it as your own insurance fund.

You can start with a small fund even if it is just R 1,000. This should be equavalent to your excess. As your fund grows increase the excess (which will reduce your premium) until such time as you have enough to cover yourself in the event of a total loss like theft. It is important that you put something away every month.

I can afford to replace most parts if broken at my own cost, it is the theft that I would battle with if it was the one bike (other one is no problem to replace). Only reason I have the insurance.

That would be the only reason I'd consider insurance.... my last crash cost me around R4k in damage. To replace my road bike in its completeness though, would be eina.
