When you take your bike in for a service at any of the respective lbs, what do they actually do/check?

It depends what you take it in for a Major service / a minor service

Minor Service wash.

Major service wash with soapy water ann put 3 in 1 oil on the chain.

A major service the whole bike should be stripped and regreased. From the hubs to the pedals. New cables and housing (normally cheap stuff).

 

For the price of about 3 services you can get yourself all the right tools and do it yourself.

Depends on the Bike Shop, Most Major services include replacing cables, setting gears and brakes, truing wheels a lube and wash, headset service, BB and Hub service.

 

A minor service will replace cables, lube and adjust gears.

 

Sometimes if you are lucky the bike shop will swop out your nice quick release levers and put cheep cr@ppy ones back on.

Do have all the right tools and do the services myself, just wanted to check whether I miss anything
