sixfifty.com are slowly dropping their wheel prices, their cheapest being USD$220 plus shipping and you can get tyres locally from R550-R900 depending on where you look.

I've been told that Stan's hoops are the best of the bunch. After that its tyres and labour and all the other paranephalia that makes up the price tag

Plenty clearance at the back, and also on the suntour shock

Will post pics by the weekend

Using ZTR crest with Schwalbe tyres

Velocity are also a good hoop

The cheapest stans you can get are R879 http://www.buycycle.co.za/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=444

Will cost R2200-2500 for spokes, nipples, tape, valves and to build the wheels (unless you build them yourself)

Add to that your hubs

then your tyres

I am busy contemplating doin a 650b conversion on a hard tail.

Is there a standard 26 inch fork that works better than others - I have a Fox Talas 14omm that I was thinking of using, or is this insanity and likely to result in some dental work when it throws me off?

What is the recommendation wrt Fork - other than Lefty ? i.e Fox or Rock Shox?

Any fox should work and should be able to run a 2.25

Rock Shox do not work

Decided to convert my Chinese carbon 26"

Before:

After:

Got my 650b Wheels over the weekend.

Frame was resprayed white, branded with Salomon decals I got at the Oceans Expo earlier the year.

Doesn't look store bought, but not to bad for a self done Job

Fork is an epicon, got enough clearance (same as Suntour, basically)

Wheels are a lot lighter than the XT wheels, so that in itself made a massive difference, and it does feel like it rolls better.

Will test it at the Leewenboshfontein 3 day race/ride over the weekend

Looks good in white ... whose postman bike is that in the back ground of the pic?

Dude, you're buying your spoooks in the wrong place. I got 2 sets of DT Swiss Champion spokes for R 250. Landed. From CRC.

And if you're in the southern suburbs, take your wheel to Kurt at Magnet / Speedy Cycles in Wynberg. Does a fantastic job, and builds a wheel for just R 85. He also doesn't mind if you take your own parts in there. He just charges the labour.
