Anyone know of group rides taking place in and around J-Bay during December?

I'll be in town from 17 to 31 Dec and would prefer riding with people. Bringing the MTB but if there's a roadie group I'll bring both.

I know they have a bike park some 30km out, would make for a nice loooong ride.

Thanks.

I am originally from a farm close to JBay and going home from 14 dec to 4 Jan.....

A new mountain bike park opened about 15min drive from Jbay towards PE, going to try it out.

Close by for me to ride with the bike....very yummm.

There is also Longmore forrest, but this is about 35min drive also towards PE.

Let me know if you know of other places.....pleassseeee

Longmore is about 5 minutes away from the J-Bay bike park and is great for hill training. I have ridden with a group one Saturday morning at 6am and as far as I know it is a regular MTB group ride that does about 30km.

I don't have the LBS details but the owner of the shop will be able to assist with local rides. Will see if I can get his details and PM them to you.

I'm thinking of riding there on the 2nd of Jan...wonder what the day fees will look like then, as I see "opening special" was already R30.

Maybe combining that with a few laps around Woodridge.

On the 3rd I would want to do Longmore via the waterfall.

You can also take the dirt road to Kabeljous (just before you enter town from PE side) past the quarry and just carry on. You might have to go through a few farm gates but just carry on and on and on. Nice rolling hills. This is the final bit of the same road from the TransBaviaans, in reverse.

This is the one we ride most. If you ride to Patensie it is about 50 km one way wit brekkie at Patensie and the wife picks you up. You can also find a gravel road that turns off close to the the circle on the R102 heading to the N2. This road is about 6 km of arouns 3-4% downhill and joins the gravel road at Kabeljauws. I have heard of a track the motorbikers use that turns off the Kabeljauws gravel road at the waterfall and ends up at Mondplaas, but I have not tried it.

Speak to Josua at Jbay Cycles for other group rides.

The Jbay Bike park is nice, three loops varying from 3,5 km to 8 km with some good climbing. The entry covers the whole day, and they have the basic coffee/burger/snacky kind of chow available.

Longmore is also a good climbing place, but is about 35-ish minutes away from Jbay.

You can drive to St Francis and chat to the dude that runs the bike shop at the Spar center....they also have a track there that they ride, or you can hop on the district roads and cycle to Oyster bay and back.

For the roadbike I ride to Humansdorp from Jbay, as the road has a shoulder for us to use....sometimes when I am strong I head through Humansdorp to the circle at the St Francis links, which is about 60 km on the road with 450-ish meters of ascent.

Before you get excited though...I am a very social and larger than life 40% fit cyclist, so a 10 year old on a BMX will outride me. I have some monster mates thoughthumbup1.gif I ride about 27km of district roads every second day, and do about 250m climbing, so no hardcore.

How's the road bike sene in jbay?

Most of the biking is fragemented in general...mostly 2 or 3 guys riding together. It is very safe to ride here so the groups are small. For road I usually ride out to Humansdorp and back, about 32 km with 250m climbing (two 80m in 1km climbs) if you turn around at Engen. If you want to go further you can either turn left towards St Francis for a fairly flat ride, or right towards Hankey. Hankey and back will be about 700m climbing (mostly three more climbs with flattish road in between)

These roads all have 1,5m shoulders for cyclists to use, and I have yet to hear of a cyclist getting knocked. Holiday season is the scary part, as we now have to deal with all those guys you dodge every day....and we have been lulled into a sense of safety hereph34r.png

You coming down for a bit?

Yah...the wind was intense this morning. There is a gravel road that runs past the cemetary which joins the road you too when you turned off the Hdorp road, it joins just before the dip at Lombardini. Take that, turn right and ride up to the Hdorp road, turn around and enjoy the downhill, stop and watch some wildlife, turn right after the dip and ride to the St Francis road, turn around and head home downwind. Good for about 60-70 km and you are off the tar.

I would love to go for longer rides with you, but 40-50 km slow km is my limit on a mtb for now.

PM Raboebi, perhaps the two of you can go play.
