Agreed - didn't mean it was carbon specifically. Just noticed the couplers. Didn't realise they wouldn't work with carbon. Learn something every day

Sure they do....tandem Calfee fullsus custom goodness with S&S couplers

And yes at around 50cm that is quite possibly the worlds tallest BB!

Why split the front triangle of a frame?

Cool engineering but I don't get it...

From what I understand these bikes are 'travel' bikes required to be transported on a regular basis (in planes etc). I presume the position of the couplers is determined by the most even spilt without affecting the frames major stress points...?

Leigh the owner of cycle centre has/had a custom built titanium tandem that he and his girlfriend use when the travel overseas. The whole bike breaks up and fits in a small box. It's very impressive to see.

The only logical reason one would have them is of you travel a lot.

It's like a folding bike, only much better.

As said already for travel purposes only. Many airlines, especially in the US, charge a lot of money for any oversized baggage. This can easily be $250 one way. Generally the cost of installing couplers to split the frame is paid for within one return trip flight.
