Nah, Brenton - could have happened to anyone man.

At least we got rid of it for anyone else who goes into it blind, not knowing what to expect and then seeing a loose, dusty off camber corner before going head first into that snapped growth.

It's now gone. A small lapse. That's it...

BTW - I have it on good authority that there's going to be even MORE at Jonkers in a few weeks, so maybe this was for the better :)

Ja, sure did.

An awesome Dr Odendaal, an ex SADF medic, cleaned it out and stitched it up in a matter of minutes. Super cool. No pain.

Gonna see him later today to see if external stitches can be removed yet.

Specially opened up his office to sort it out chop chop.

Got internal and external stitching done as damage was pretty deep inside.

Missed main artery and damaged no muscle tissue, nerves or ligaments.

No bleeding whatsoever throughout or pain.

Crazy thing is that If I had braked any less or later & not lay the bike down the branch would have gone through my face/head or throat or severed the artery in my arm. Pretty wild.

Interestingly enough I knew I shouldn't  have gone to Paarl, but blew it off instead.

Even got a txt before leaving to rather come ride the new black trail at Jonkers.

Turned that down as I felt I gave my word to go ride with others and don't like going back on my word. There's more going on around us than we realise ... we just need to pay attention to the detail.

....

... speak out loud though .... to myself ... as I keep playing the incident back through my mind.

It is the mountain after all ... like going for  a surf.

Never turn your back on the sea or waves.

Aaaaagh , just talking nonsense now.

Be safe out there

Happy Trails

Better not to dwell on it....you are alive to ride another day..that is all that matters.

Eish. Hope it heals well dude.

Yeah, I turned around briefly to see where the wife was and a branch scraped my upper arm right into the armpit. I now have a permanent scar across the top of my bicep.

Anybody imported a helmet from CRC here...what was the duties?

Yeah dude, that was NASTY. Can't believe you still rode the rest of the trail after that "graze". And on your first run, nogal!!

BTW - the offending branch was Leathermanned (saw attachment) as it really really is in a precarious position.

Where was this?

I have and have had a helmet slip through sans duties and another attract 35% (if I remember correctly) and VAT.

Anyhow...lets hope it comes through at lunch time.

Paarl. On the "easy line" just after those 2 consecutive small drops, there's a flat, almost off camber right hander that is very loose. Tree ON the corner, on the outside.

If you're talking about Taal Monument I think I know it. Struggling to recall the line. But I do remember my close call on that trail. Close to the bottom after those little jumps there's a berm that swings left. It kinda looks like a smaller berm within a berm. Creating an almost carved out rut between them which can be disastrous if you don't commit to a line early enough. I was going too fast for my limited skills, aimed for the outside but caught the inside and slid out. I flew chest first into that tree on the corner and bruised my ribs. Any sort of protruding branch or sharp object and I wouldn't have been so lucky.

I love that trail. But it also scared me a couple times.

LOL. There's a name for Paarl. Sometimes, on some lines, in some sections.

Pick a Rut.
