Yes, I know. But its a carb. I don't get this.

It is a carb that has been so modified that it no longer has negative carb attributes.

It does not spike insulin and I imagine does not cause all sorts of allergic type issues that can be got from grains etc.

Read this - http://eatingacademy...erstarch-part-i

Personally I tried it, didn't like the taste and couldn't feel any difference in performance so I'm back to GU (or Vooma)

Yeh - it's effects are positively under-whelming. The only reason that I continue to use it is that I haven't yet bonked while using it. Certainly don't feel like a rocket ship on it...

Ok dudes, here's a curveball! I have been doing LCHF for a while (weight has stabilised, no further losses)... but, I'm planning on falling pregnant ... thoughts on LCHF during this time. I have emailed Prof Noakes - hoping to hear from him!

This link might be of some interest to you even though it does not have scientific info. Check the other link in the article on the 1 year reports as well

I am not a part (yet), but I honestly think that if my wife allows it, my kid will be a more paloe diet. I don’t think I will go full LCHF with the baby as I don’t know if he/she is carb resistant yet. But I don’t think you can go wrong with paloe. I know many people in the family will blow their tops, but after all the research done I am sure it will be a great lifestyle for a baby/tod

I would love to get my hands on some research on this so if anyone has some, please share

Feedback - no word from Prof Noakes on the pregnancy thing yet... I think he may be out of the country. But I've given it some thought - during pregnancy your body usually demands stuff (in my first 2 pregnancies all I could eat was vegetables (lucky - phew!!)) - so it is going to be interesting going forward. BUT - I do still want his opinion though.

Regarding the kids stuff - my teenagers are trying LCHF, but I must say, its hard. They follow the principles mostly, but they dont (obviously) do the research as much as we do and they sometimes forget... also, I'm not always around to think up some great foodie ideas (although i try and keep my fridge etc stocked with the right stuff) - so what's easier than chucking some pasta into a boiling pot of water and grating some cheese over it - its like manna to them

Slight hijack: Does any one on this thread know something about the treatment of epilepsy with LCHF? I have a relative (teenage boy) suffering from this disease and the current medical treatment is only producing limited results.

Guess what just came in (re pregnancy on LCHF) ... :

oi - epilepsy is not cool. I quickly had a look and google is pasted all over with info. The general concensus is LCHF is GREAT for epilepsy. According to Dietdoctor.com, there is 80 years of success with epilepsy and LCHF!!!!!!!

Just 2 of the links I found (I just googled "LCHF and Epilepsy") :

TLW, here's a little known fact. You have already been in full ketosis at least twice in your life !

Each time you gave birth is when that happened !!!

Google it, a woman goes into ketosis during labour and childbirth - now why would one's body do such an unnatural thing ??? Go on, stay on LCHF - you may even find falling pregnant is a lot easier (that seems to be the consensus from many females on Paleo/LCHF diets) and your child will thank you for it later ! :D

Thanks guys. Already googled the subject. Plenty of info available, was just wondering if any one has some personal experience on LCHF and treatment of epilepsy in teenagers.

Not in teenagers, my daughter was 8 when we tried it. It did not work terribly well for her - just a small reduction in seizures - but please don't take that as a reason not to try. I have heard enough anecdotal stories of it working for others.

I assume you re already found 'matthewsfreinds' and 'thecharliefoundation'.

Also there is a dietician in Cape Town specializing in kids and keto diets Cath McGaw. They are busy planning a keto clinic in CT and having an open day of sorts shortly. My wife is involved so can get more info if you want, alternatively ask Cath.

3 other thoughts....

You may get opposition from your regular doctor that this is an unhealthy way for kids to eat... You will have to do lots of LCHF educational!

I don't know what your kid is like on anti seizure meds, mine has terrible mood swings (and she's only 9!!).

My personal belief that LCHF is right for me (and my kids) stems from the reading I did when researching this topic. Most folk look to LCHF for weight loss ... But it's the health benefits that changed my mind ... Weight loss is a side effect :)
