Htone Howzit,

I see you are still fanning the hi fat flame!!

I got roped into my first Trans baviaans and have been training at max levels whilst doing LCHF, with a lot of experimentation.

Since the Argus, I'm 6kgs lighter and staying consistently on 82kg's.

I find myself "bonking" sometimes (ride without power and energy) when I ride in the pm, without having had a substantial lunch. But as I say, when I ride its 2 hrs and it is at 75% plus. I think its because my fat intake on some days are still not high enough, and the occasional sin like Mr lindt or a limp bizkit in my coffee , but I am not addicted, really!

I have also found that a green super juice consisting of Spinach, cucumber, fresh lemon and apple juice in the blender is helping to keep my immune strong.

Sofar I am very happy with progress into the new lifestyle.

What does the ketosticks and tester show you w.r.t LCHF?

Congrats on maintaining the weight (more than a few us can say on here... ) !

The ketostix show whether you are in dietary ketosis or not - this is not super NB for many people, but for me it is, as that was how I determined when my carb intake took my body out of ketosis, i.e. how sensitive I am to carbs. Interestingly enough, the longer I am eating low-carb, the more sensitive I seem to become. I could initially quite easily get away with well over 100g of carbs per day and if I dipped out of ketosis I would be back in the next day. Now the limit is somewhere between 70 - 80g of carbs then my BG starts spiking (that's the meter you are asking about) and I go out of ketosis. My last little inspired experiment took me almost 3 days to get control over my BG levels and get my ketone readings to what would be +++ on the ketostix.

I am busy reading Peter Attia's article that I posted a link to this morning, and it bears out what I have experienced - being in ketosis is not a guarantee that you would lose weight. Having said that, I can almost certainly say that not being in ketosis (for me) is an almost certain recipe to gain weight.

How long have you been doing strict LCHF ? I ask because it takes a good couple of months and you need to surf that bonk so that your body can get used to switching between energy sources - remember that if you are fully fat adapted the intake of fats won't really matter - your body carries ample of its own fat and it will just as readily break that down as consumed dietary fat (except for MCT's which are easier to use as an energy source).

IIRC about R150 from @flexia and then about R80 to ship via Post Office. Send her a PM.

Correct - just collected 2 boxes from Flexia. I ordered Friday afternoon and collected from the PO yesterday!

Silly question - more lazy question

How about organs of animals... Like kidney and liver of Ox and Chicken? Worth eating of worth skipping?

Ideally we'd be only eating those. Meat is actually the least nutritious part, unfortunately. Apparently lung etc contains more vit c than some citrus etc. Which is why the eskimos don't get scurvy - they get their vits from what we call offal and what they call the good stuff...

What the man said

Francois - "Afval" (offal) is one of my staples. Not the whole head and eyes thing, just stomach and trotters (pens & pootjies), mix that up with some lamb stewing meat and you have an unbeatable lamb afval curry !

I am not one to shy away from offal. I love liver and kidneys. So will try to get more of it in my diet. I stay close to a market that sells these (even the smiley things that I don't do) so will stop there tonight and see what they have to over...

Thanks for the reply...

And there is nothing that beats a nice curry with "bees tong".... Drool!!!!

@Helpmytrap: I do have a few more boxes in stock, how many would you like? Cost is R150 + R80 for delivery via post office, if you are not in a position to collect directly - as HTone and wetears have also confirmed ( thank you ! )

PM me for more details and arrangements.

@htone - Some interesting numbers for you. BG before ride was 3.7 but after a 52min ride @ 66% it was 6.1.

Ta-daaah !!!! :w00t:

Random thought: If milk spikes blood glucose a bit, like we've established, wouldn't a glass of milk be an ideal post-workout recovery drink? Without having to add something to it

To my understanding that would mean that I'm not yet in ketosis because it would seem as though my body is producing glycogen to fuel my muscles?

Nope, like I said, I get the same reaction and I have been in ketosis for months. I think the body produces glycogen in any case (due to the exercise), regardless of whether you are in ketosis or not, but because you are somewhat adapted to fat burning, your body does not utilise the glycogen, which then becomes a higher BG reading at the end of the exercise. Well, that's my theory at this point... I think the body does this as an "emergency reaction" or as part of the old fight or flight thing - should you massively exceed your VO2Max, you will have the glycogen available as a last resort. Or something like that.

Makes sense.

The Jock is going to be interesting this weekend, really hope that I have the legs to at least stick with the bunch. Usually I'd be the one throwing everyone in the hurt box on climbs, going to have to ride strategically.

I must also add that I'm really happy with how my body is looking at the moment.

The effect of milk alone is not going to be significant enough. Think about it, you want a bit of carbs (to refuel stores) and some protein to repair muscle damage. Milk on its own does not provide enough of either (and there's the whole lactose thing that some people are allergic to). That's why there is a whole "Chocolate Milk" industry on the side, but that contains added carbs.

But this is also about perspective. If you asked if milk was a better post-workout recovery drink than water, then the answer would be yes. On its own, I would not call it an ideal workout drink though.

Having said that, I stopped with the whole recovery drink thing months ago, and I don't feel any worse than I did before.

(Different story when you are talking stage races, but that's another discussion entirely).

Fuel with carbs during the race, you will burn it off and it will feel like you are running on rocket fuel. Nê, JCZA ?
