Bar603 did you have HbA1c done ? If so, what was that number?

If not, have that done as it is a 3 month picture of your BG and that will indicate what course of action to take. Although your waking BG sounds high, your daytime BG appears perfect.

What made you go out and buy a BG meter - were you worried about something or were you experiencing specific symptoms ?

Thanks for your reply.

I am fine had a blood test three months ago and BG was 6.1 but we were thinking that is because of the statin I was taking so we (me and my cardiologist ) decided to stop them in order to see if the statin in the cues. Then I decided to buy a meter to see how the food I eat influence my BG.

Because I am on LCHF there is not big movement in the BG during the day it is between 5 and 5.6 only the fasting BG is a problem.

Interesting turn of events. Measured + ketones last night and NONE this morning.

I then went for a hard 40min ride as I'm tight on time this morning. NEVER FELT BETTER!! Today was the first time that the legs weren't sore when riding and doing short intervals. Not sure what the blood ketones are doing but it was a relief to have power in the legs again.

Used Futurelife high protein as an add-on to breakfast for the last 3 days. This is the porridge replacement, not the shake... Boy oh boy, did I have HUGE energy slumps about 3 hours into my day on each of those days ! Remember I ingest virtually no carbs in the fatshake, so this must have been a real overload to my system. Anyone else on here using Futurelife and had similar results ?

Ah yes, Futurelife. One of Monsanto's big customers...

The internationally respected and independent GMO testing facility at the University of the Free State conducted several thorough qualitative PCR screenings: GMO double screens for the ACB in respect of a number of food samples. The results are astonishing:

  • Nestle’s Infant cereal, Cerelac Honey was found to contain 77.65% of GM maize DNA in relation to the total maize DNA.
  • Bokomo’s Wheat Free Pronutro was found to contain both GM maize and GM soya: 90.36% GM maize and 71.42% GM soya. “This despite verbal assurances given to us telephonically by Bokomo staff that the product was non-GM” said Zakiyya Ismail, from the ACB who has been investigating GM labelling in South Africa.
  • Futurelife Energy meal, an ubiquitous dietary supplement, found also at health stores and heavily promoted publically as being “perfect for athletes of all levels and for high performance sports” is ironically, the only product that tested 100% positive for GM maize! It also contains 36.13% of GM soya.
  • Impala maize meal was found to contain 66.18% GM maize. This maize is consumed daily by millions of South Africans as an integral part of their staple diet.

Eventually got my RER and VOmax test results back.

VOmax was measured at 49 while the average for males my age is 43-52.

The RER results are very interesting to me. I put it into a table with those of Mike Pigg from Phil Maffetone's book as reference. Maffetone's formula was spot on for me at the beginning. I did the normal 180 - age, but added 5 as I've been training for a year when I started Maffetone's method. It brought me to an aerobic threshold of 148. The testing now shows it's 1 lower at 147. What I'm unsure of, is how I will be getting to a threshold of 152 by the end of this year (180-age+10 if I reach two years of training without injury). Right now my RER at 152 is not even close...

What is also interesting, is to see how quickly the burning of glucose escalates after exceeding my threshold (147+). Just two beats later I'm burning 70% glucose  I was hoping to do a 70.3 triathlon in December at 155-160 effort, but I now think I'll blow up. I'll be burning 1000 calories an hour with 300 coming from fat, and can only replace 400 by digestion. It leaves me with a deficit of 300 per hour, or 1700 over 5:45. My stores will only have about 1500. Maybe gluconeogenesis can provide the shortfall, but it is still risky. It would be better to do 50% of the biking at threshold to make sure I have enough for a run at 155-165 HR.

This also strengthens my intention of not excluding carb intake during prolonged exercise. If I go over 2 hours I will take in 300-400 kcal per hour. To leave it to my liver to produce 700 kcal during hour 3 and beyond feels way too taxing.

Thanks for this tombeej - my 2.5 year old eats Cerelac - no longer! Assume that applies to maize variant only and not the rice?

I also used to eat Future Life (alot!) but not since going LC.

For interests sake, I know they took a lot of flak about being full of GMO.

Then a few weeks ago they announced on FB, that they are no longer sourcing products from GMO...

Thanks for the quick feedback, the GI is 55 but for the life of me I cannot remember the carbs, although 23g / 75g serving rings a bell. I knew about the GMO issues, but thought I could shortcut making a fatshake. From tomorrow it will be cream, milk and protein powder again, oh and yes, quite "purgatory" for me as well. Not a great experience all round.

Edit : 26g / 75g or 36g / 100g - thats half my daily allowance right there !

Or just chuck out all the refined carbs (for me, that includes ready-made cereals) once and for all.

Example: a whole pink grapefruit equates to about 10 - 12 grams of carbs (@ a low GI score of 25). Considering how nutrient-dense a graprefuit is, that's for me a much better source of carbs than porridge, a hotcross bun, etc., ever will be.
