Was planning on the 5150 being my first major event before 2016 E.L 70.3 but now doing Durban 70.3 in August [emoji15] will still do the 5150 Ekhuruleni. ..

I do the 5150 as an indication of my fitness level...... its a great event .... albeit a tad expensive but all the events are anyway. Ironman run good events.

This a good event to do as an intro to tri?

Can you do the swim without a wetsuit or better to do with?

I think that a 1.5km swim might be a bit hectic for a first triathlon, unless you are used to open water swimming.

I swim in the pool at the gym and when I got into the water for my first open water swim, it felt like I had never swam more than 50 meters before.  Not a great experience.

That said, I believe that the Ironman events are amazing and would be worth doing this.

I swim at Heia and also Midmar, will be there this weekend, so use to open water swimming... the cycling is not an issue and just need to up the running a little

Of course putting them all together might be hardest part !!

Was more curious with regard to doing the swim without a wetsuit as do not want to go to the expense if not needed... especially as want to see if will enjoy tri and think the sprint events might be too short... but don't really know as have not done a tri

Thanks, the ironman events do look worthwhile.

I do not own a wetsuit, as an open water swimmer I never wear one in triathlons.... I know it can make me a tad faster however I prefer the speedo as that's what I am used to....if the water is too cold though you could be forced to wear one ...however in ZA that rarely happens... FINA events (open water swim events ) do not allow wetsuits.

don't worry about, go without is my opinion all though the majority of triathletes will disagree

If you want to try one out, I believe that Terry from Xterra Wetsuits will rent one out to you for you to give it a try.  If you decide to keep it, they take the deposit or rental amount and use that towards to the suit.  I have never used them but have heard a lot of positive things about those guys.

On the note of swimming at Heia, how does it work there?  I have been wanting to go out and try it but not quite sure what to expect.

Where does one train for the swim up here in Jhb?

I dont go to Gym and i don't know of any place that has a 50m length pool.

If you in the East (Germiston) there is Delville swimming pool, very close to Germiston lake and located just off Elsburg road in Germiston.

Outdoor 50 m pool and heated.

That is if its still functional, last time I swam there was eons ago....
