I HATE pushing.I'd rather pedal up at the pace of caterpillar. Pushing is taxing on my calves. Wide-range 10spd cassette and a 30T chainring and you'll be sorted. Don't stress about spinning out. You're not riding dirt roads on that thing. If you get your pump on and the trail is steep enough, you hardly need to pedal. He's not gonna be sprinting at more than 40kph so anything larger than a 30t will be useless. But yeah - it's a BEAST!!! I want a coil shock. If gravity has your back and you're riding techy trails, you'll hardly ever be cranking the cranks when doing over 35km/h. Enduro races aren't won or lost by who can push the biggest gear. Yes it all depends on the terrain, but welcome to SA where gravity doesn't always have your back and you need to put in some pedal strokes on the flat sections. Right now he just wants to have fun on the trails and get to the top without having a hernia. Wide range and 30t for the win.
