Have the wave starts been confirmed yet?

Obviously wave 1 will be Pro's. Will the other 2 waves be based on sex or age or both?? If age then 18 - 35 or what?

Wave starts have been confirmed. It is according to age. I don't recall all the exact ages but I do know youngest last. I really think ironman must if they really see waves as necessary do it according to previous swim times. That will solve 80% of the concerns I have.

Firstly - things in life change. Secondly when you entered they course hadn't been confirmed so in fact you entered without knowing the exact course or final numbers for that matter. Thirdly it is not all about you - it is about giving as many people an opportunity to compete in a once off event in Africa, to raise the profile of the sport, to grow the sports and possibly get more events which would give us, the athletes, more option of races in the future.

IF they do go by waves you will be in a smaller group and as such have an advantage - by the time you catch other groups they would have spread out so I don't see how this 'traffic' would effect you (as you are a good swimmer).

Im still not seeing how it will effect the other traffic - please elaborate

I hear you, And agree. It is just demotivating for me. If they can rank swim waves according to previous swim times then I will feel a lot better.

You sure? usually its youngest first.

PS Varkie - get your head right - there are going to be some challenges on the way (isn't that why we do it?) but its going to be AWESOME doing this with 2499 like-minded individuals.

Ja but then a strong cyclist like myself has got traffic issues when cycling.... You cant really win...

It is what it is... At least you now know what it is and can prepare accordingly...

I assume they saw the younger okes go slower in general at IM.

I'm very lucky as I pretty much suck at all 3 disciplines (all 4 if you count transitions) but I am a very positive person with the single mindedness of a Jack Russel trying to get to his favourite chewing toy.

Whatever 'they' or the day throw at me will be embraced and enjoyed and I will praise the Lord for just being there and able!!!

Can't wait!!!

Rather make it a challenge. Im also a strong swimmer and it grates my nuts to see huge 'peletons' come past you in the ride but don't let that detract from a good day out.

You can start in the second wave if you are within 12% of the winners time (I think)

Turn that frown upside down! you have an entry!

Okes, this is Ironman (will be my first)... Surely it being tougher is a good thing? All the more to be proud of when crossing that finish line! You all need to open a can of HTFU!

I’m not sure if it will upset the ironmen again, but I still maintain that this has been one incredible marketing success for the 2014 event.

*They have taken the same product.

*Lost a headline sponsor which doubles the effective entry price.

*Given a bit of spin with the 10th event in PE being a special.

*And yet somehow they have had a huge spike in entry numbers, selling out for the first time.

It’s an amazing coup for whoever is their marketing strategist. FD must be loving the cashflow position right now.

i would kill to be able to do this event no matter what the format but thanks ot bad knees I can't.... and yet there are so many people moaning about a few changes to the race. It's an ironman......not meant to be easy........all this means is you have to train a bit harder..... jeepers people

oh god, here we go. Please go and start your own thread or contribute to the thread about race prices. Or even better start another thread about how well some business are doing in SA and how crap it is for all involved.

Why are you so obsessed with other people making money? or doing a good job for that matter? You are the only one going on about the prices and profits yet you haven't even entered - or done an ironman. ffs dude grow up its getting tiring

Swim:

70.3 with 3000 competitors is not an issue. They will just organise the waves. They have learned from previous issues.

Bike:

60000m / 1800 competitors = 33.33 m per bike

90000m / 2500 competitors = 36 m per bike (a lot of the 2500 won't pitch, so you will get more space)

Your argument has no basis. Read in a German accent if you like.

Now go train or don't race if you think it is going to be so k@k.

This maths is wrong!

90% of people are out the swim within an hour of each other. Fastest rider does 40km/h

Therefore:

40000m / (1800 * 0.9) = 24.6m

40000m / (2500 * 0.9) = 17.7m

and 60% probably out in 30minutes of each other. Fastest rider maybe 35km/h

Therefore:

17500m / (1800 * 0.6) = 16.2m

17500m / (2500 * 0.6) = 11.6m

Sure it may spread out during the ride and sure it will be better with two wave (not counting the first wave that maybe 100 pros).

You are kidding yourself it you think it is going to be more spread out. Good for drafting ;)

Although with some more hills you can drop the weak, hanger ons.
