I think it just greed.

The organiser of the B World Champs gave CSA more than R1m. But they did nothing to help the organiser. They had the nerve to ask for more money.

One mill in the pocket' date=' not a guarantee[/quote']

Phooew, they (CSA) are not living in the real world, or they are suffering serious delusions of grandeur, thats for sure!.

This isnt massive business like soccer, cricket or rugby - how do they expect the sponsor to recover this kind of charge.?

I can confirm that you all got your facts wrong on why the Tour was cancelled.

Hopefully CSA will release a statement.

Would be great to also have the sponsor and organiser's statement as well. Ouch

i dont think the organisers could come up with the guarantees(a guess), I'm sure Austin you dont wanna race then there's no prize money, or halfway they just stop with the tour. On the other hand, there is this little 3 day in die Boland....

so any person can arrive here and say "we are going to have a Tour of South Africa".  they arrange road permission , teams enter , the whole katootie. the race starts , the race finishes. and then the organisers dissapear. no prize money is paid out , some bills are unpaid. who's going to get the flak for allowing its territory to be used for this Tour if things go pearshaped? CSA.  must i carry on??????

Has tight pants resigned from CSA ? Someone told me he has.

I guess you are referring to Bellairs? Also heard that this morning.

Does it have anything to do with non-agreement between CSA-PPA on amalgamation or do I have it totally wrong?

Maybe this should be a topic all on its own...?

TOUR OF SOUTH AFRICA

It is with a great deal of regret that the CSA Board has to announce

that the 2008 Tour of South Africa will not take place. The Event

organizers elected not to run the Event owing to the fact that they were

unable to raise sufficient sponsorship funding to cover the anticipated

expense budget. They have expressed a strong interest in sitting down

with us as soon as possible to negotiate afresh for a 2009 Tour of South

Africa. We will do everything within our powers to make this happen.

For the sake of transparency we advise that:

1. An Agreement with Sweetspot (the Event organisers) was reached

in September 2007 for the holding of the 2008 Tour of South Africa, but

the contract confirming the Agreement was not signed by Sweetspot

despite requests and the R1million fee was not paid on due date, i.e. 31

December 2007.

2. In mid-January 2008, i.e. 2 weeks ago, Sweetspot's

representatives including Morne du Plessis and Hugh Roberts, requested

an extension of 2 weeks saying that they had not been able to raise the

required sponsorships but thought that they would be able to do so by 31

January 2008. To assist we tried to identify yet further sponsors for

them to approach. The shortfall was approximately R4million.

3. By Saturday, the 26th January 2008, they had still not raised

the required sponsorship funding and requested a reduction in the

sanction fee which was by agreement, reduced to R250 000,00 and also a

long-term contract, somewhat different to the one originally agreed

upon.

4. We were in the process of negotiating the length of the contract

(and in fact CSA was about to propose a 5 year contract subject to Board

approval) when we received a telephone call from Sweetspot to the effect

that Sweetspot had decided not to hold the Tour this year.

5. We endeavoured to persuade the Sweetspot representative to

change their minds but to no avail. In order for the Event to have

taken place, its investors and others would have had to have made loans

to the Event to make it happen.

6. In order to assist the Tour of South Africa in finding sponsors

for 2009 we have mooted the possibility of the Event taking place in

February 2009. If this should happen then hopefully the Tour of South

Africa and the Giro can work together to share expenses, particularly in

bringing overseas Teams here.

The CSA Board will report further on negotiations with Sweetspot as and

when these take place.

Kind regards
