Well, if the rumours about the Zen 2 Ryzen 3000 series performance are to be believed, they could be great for both gaming and dev/CAD?

For example: https://wccftech.com/amd-zen-2-5ghz-12-core-4-3ghz-16-core-cpus-leaked-benchmarked/

Take that with a shovel of salt, of course, but official announcement is Monday? So, we'll know soon enough.

I plan on going for the fastest Ryzen 3000 I can afford, decent MB (x570 chipset if I can), decent RAM, and big-ish M.2 SSD (hopefully 1TB, partitioned for Windows, Linux and games). GPU upgrade will have to wait a year or two.

I have A GeForce 670gtx 2gig that still kicks ass for R600 if that helps you or 550ti 1gig for R300

Try to get an NVME drive. They are a tad faster than the normal M2 SSD drives. I upgraded my wifes notebook to a NVME and it is now a workable system. My notebook got an 970 Samsung NVME drive upgrade as well, and it works well enough to run most games at a semi decent level. Bought the laptop just before I was retrenched and traded a game PC for my wife’s notebook.

Moridin with the new Intel Flaws and the software patches they need to implement dropping performance as much as 25% the whole game changes, waiting a month or two for some concrete info on said performance loss is a good idea. Only reason I went Intel was due to the lack of possible motherboards for the Ryzen at the time. The cost became the same and performace was better on intel chip for same price.

Thanks, but I currently have a Radeon R390 8GB :) My bottleneck is only everything else.

Definitely! Their prices have come down quite nicely, the two Mushkin models especially are well-priced. My current OCZ Vector was a huge upgrade from a normal drive, so a NVME M.2 should be veeeery nice!

Is AMD still in the mix?

For the price, yes, I think. And as Amberdrake mentioned, with all the Spector etc flaws currently on the Intel CPUs, and the performance impacts of the software fixes (which AMD claims their CPUs are less or not impacted at all)...

The rumours are that the next gen Ryzens based on Zen 2 (watch out for the 3X00G ones with onboard GPU, they are a generation behind) will have a good jump in performance again.

Had an interview with Ubisoft yesterday. Finance position - nothing exciting like game development. But would be a crazy awesome dream to work for a video game company.

Congrats with your new job. But, get ready for some long nightly grinds at the office. Game development/production is not for sissies.

My son wants to be a games content creator. I already gave him the speech. He is still determined that he wants to go there. I told him to start by downloading Blender and have a go at it on his own using some tuts.

Finance department - completely disconnected from development.

I have done my long grindy hours qualifying. That is not and will not ever be my life again. 9-5 with maybe some busy time at financial year-end.

Will the new gen Ryzen CPUs have a quad channel memory architecture? Apparently even Threadripper aint that great with regards to their memory access architecture.

Ja. Year ends. The nightmare time of the year for all finance people. My SIL is in the fruit export business as a financial guru (CA), and she is spending weekends at the office sometimes.
