i find westworld pretty dull. some good moments, some potentially interesting story telling, but in large part i find it to be a dragged out yawnfest. This is the same type of letdown that S01 of Mr Robot was to me.

Perhaps i'm just suffering series-fatigue. But i suspect i might like WW more if it was all released in wack for total immersion,binge-consumption.I'd rather watch Samurai Carpenter vids on youtube than watch WW. i'm that jaded by it.

I am kind of in agreement with you..they are trying to hard to make it culty..but in the process making it dull instead. it being so dull...you tend to get distracted thereby missing the whole different time lines thing

I am now 3 episodes behind[emoji85] I just can't get myself to want to watch it.. but I think my brain is just fried to sit and try and figure out what the hell is going on

my problem is that I have not identified with any characters..maybe delores a bit. Maive annoys the bejeevers out of me. The MIB fulfills the villainous role well...and william and his bud are a so so...I wouldnt be sad to see them killed - even though they cant be (technically). Also not convinced about the whole MIB-William connection either (but you still need to get there Gen)

True.. oh well maybe next Friday then lol

I agree with El Cap. There are a few WTF moments, juuuust enough to keep you sorta interested in the next episode. But there's something.... missing.

You're setting yourself up for the perfect way to watch it though - binge. If you do it like that the story may make more sense from a continuity perspective.

I'm liking Bernard as a character. Just feel sorry for him and the level to which he's been manipulated. Pity the way it's going for him at the moment (don't wanna spoil)

I think the reason I like Westworld so much is that both my brother and I grew up reading Asimov et al, so we've always been fascinated by the the concept of AI. Sci-fi is still one of my favourite genres and with people like Kurzweil talking about the Singularity and movies like Ex Machina and The Machine, the show is fascinating for its intelligent approach to a question that has been a frequent topic of debate in our house:

If we can make machines self-aware, would they be benevolent or would it be one of the worst ideas since those Indians greeted the pilgrims in America with food instead of just slaughtering them and hanging up their skulls as a warning to others?

You always seem jaded by shows I personally find interesting.

I just started Westworld. I'm 2 episodes in and I can't wait to keep going.

Admittedly I feel no need to binge through it though.

The story might seem predictable.

But I feel like it leaves enough room for plot twists I won't see coming.

Save for juggernauts like Ed Harris and Anthony Hopkins. The acting is quite mediocre.

Its interesting to see actors try and emulate artificial intelligence.

One of my favourite scenes is in the first episode where Ford visits Old Bill. One of the older outdated host models kept in storage. The two indulge in a seamless conversation over some whiskey. The exchange is brief but profound in the way it brings up an old cliche within the context of the shows plot.

But Old Bill has subtle jittery mannerisms which give away the fact that he is not human.

Newer model hosts like Delores and Maeve don't suffer from this. But that's the point.

Their updated software allows them to talk and move to the likeness of a real human being.

Its this likeness which sells Westworld to the users. Of course such likeness can only be achieved when the algorithms for expression and reaction allow the host some degree of self awareness. Its how hosts explore this self awareness that make the show.

If we can make machines self-aware, would they be benevolent or would it be one of the worst ideas since those Indians greeted the pilgrims in America with food instead of just slaughtering them and hanging up their skulls as a warning to others?

Remember. Artificial intelligence is limited to its programming. Self awareness (or any other human trait for that matter) is either a result of intentional objective based programming or an unforeseen 'consequence' of existing algorithms and how they interact with each other. To make hosts seem more natural in the way they behave. They have to be programmed with algorithms which emulate things which are natural in humans. One of these traits if not the most important human trait of them all. Is self preservation. If a host is programmed with some degree thereof...

Michael Wincott as Old Bill. One of the most distinctive voices ever on film.

The argument, I believe, would be that should machines become self-aware they would be able to alter their programming. Thus, should a machine decide that in the interest of self-preservation it would be logical to eliminate the human threat...

Watched the latest episode of The Walking Dead last night.

I honestly don't know whether the showrunners are taking the piss or not. Dedicating an entire episode to a minor character whose name most watchers of the show probably couldn't even recall?!

I didn't even finish the second season of Fear The Walking Dead. Don't think I'll be back next October for season 8 of TWD.

got round to it. I wouldn't say she is a minor character...I think this is her third season. I actually thought it was one of the better episodes this season and last season...at least it didnt involve bloody rick who needs to die now

I'm loving it and am rapidly vanishing down the road towards being an uber nerd when it comes to all the theories etc in there.
