Rather get some sealskinz socks.

http://www.sealskinz.co.za/catalogue/

They are about the same price as a good set of booties and actually works quite well. The only time water gets in is if your legs are submerged and the water runs in from the top. Their gloves are also quite weather proof too. I've not tried the gloves but a friend has a pair and he enjoys them on cold winter morning commutes.

On the jacket I don't have much wisdom to offer. Unless you wish to spend huge amounts of money on something that is breathable and water proof, you will have to settle for one or the other. The first ascent jacket works for most conditions and remember that it seldom rains for a linear 230kms. You may get 3 or 4 hours of rain at places. If you are layered and you keep moving at a steady pace, you'll be cold, but not hypothermic. Remember to double your nutritional intake in extreme weather. Your body will burn much more trying to stay warm, so you have to compensate.

Thanks! Going to look at some Sealskins tomorrow!

I last did it in 2010 and wrote a report on it for fun (attached). The info on it being the longest single stage race is no longer correct obviously but back then it was...

You may find the largely tongue-in-cheek advice of some use.

If you're staying in the Hostel, what ever you do just don't get up before 07h00 ! It's f...ing cold out there and the race only starts at 10h00 !!!!

And if you do decided to get up, don't put your cycling shoes on and make a noise like a stampeding herd of wildebeest. Some of us like to lie in ;)

Thanks for all the advice. Super excited and nervous to do this race, its been on the list for a long time now.

A quick question, how do we taper for this race. Never tapered for anything so long. So I have put in the training and reaching the point where i need to cut back, but obviously don't want to do nothing. So do I just do short rides to keep loose? everyday or every other day?

Sorry, I think you're still gonna wake up at 5am for the 10am race! :whistling:
