Nofearnofun Posted June 20, 2013 Share Hi there hubbers! I am in need of your advice. I have talked myself into doing the umko classic in KZN next month. 45,9km with 1155m of elevation gain and loss, I'm over weight and my climbing SUCKS! I have set my mind on loosing 5kgs before the race to try help but I need advice on training for all the climbing! I am based on the East rand and would like to do a ride on weekends with similar distance and elevation gain and loss as mentioned above. The only place I can think of is going out to Groenies and doing loops near the back and middle where there's more climbing. I know fountains has had its security issues, is groenies safe to ride alone tho? Am I on the right track here or should I be riding somewhere more challenging? If so, where? (Not to far from the east). Lastly does anyone have advice or a program I can follow in the gym during the week that will help grow my climbing strength and stamina? Mr SingleTrack Posted June 20, 2013 Share Drive all the way to the bottom of breeds and do hill repeats. You'll gain +- 800m in 10km. I also do hill repeats at northcliff koppie. There are a couple of steep hills but I use the one with a constant gradient and I get 100m in 1km

garrethk Posted June 21, 2013 Share Welcome to KZN, Kingdom of the hills. At least the hills are well placed, I've done some 45km races where the monster hills are at the end. Break the hill down into portions and at your self goals along the way, (and pace yourself). Hope you enjoy your race

Hector Posted June 21, 2013 Share Make sure you are wearing a heart rate monitor. When you heart rate gets to 85% get off your bike and walk. No shame in walking, the dead cant talk. Good luck

Nofearnofun Posted June 21, 2013 Share Thanks for all the advice and well wishes guys! So far my action plan is to train like I would for a triathlon as I loose weight fast when I do. I have three weekends left to put in time on the bike so I plan to do three hard rides (as hard as I can).Monday to thursday will be running and swimming every day with a spinning class thrown in (is spinning going to help with what I am training for?) Saturdays - a hard 50km (maybe 60km if I can).Fridays and sundays - rest days. Does this sound cool or what should I change?
Paul Ruinaard Posted June 21, 2013 Share Yup, a full lap at suikerbosrand will give u the climbing.Suikerbosrand is used for Epic training. Not for the faint of hear - one lap is god for your distance. Two is insane.Go there. Maybe you see a leopard, maybe you don't?
