Hi

Was wondering if a Zee 10 speed shifter would work out with the new SLX shadow RD.

I have looked on the shimano site but didn't have much luck.

Anyone have some feedback?

Most 10spd Shimano shifters will work on the 10spd derailleurs.

+1 ... same brand shifter/derailleur of course.

Many derailleurs are in fact not "speed specific" e.g. a 9spd deraileur will work with 10spd shifters too.

If I remember correctly (i'm old ....) in some cases not. I have had an experience fitting a 10sp RD to 9sp a while ago and it didn't work (MTB). No way to get it to shift properly.

And no it wasn't my stupidity but that of the tjop that sold it to me at a multi day stage race in the veld ...... 'tech zone'

Sorry, backward compatibility (10 to 9) may indeed be an issue, but 9 to 10 shouldn't be a problem.

I plan on going 10spd at some point. Will try and run my XTR 9sp mech on a 10spd cassette first and see how it goes before splashing on a new mech.

In the past we ran 8spd mechs on 9spd cassettes etc.

It's all about actuation ratios.

  • SRAM 9 & 10sp (X7, X9, X0 not the Attack shifters though) use a 1:1 actuation ratio
  • Shimano FD's use 1:1 (hence why a bike can run SRAM shifters with Shimano FD but not RD
  • Shimano 9sp uses 2:1
  • Shimano 10sp 1:1.1 (hence why with a little mod you can run a SRAM 9sp shifter on a 10sp Shimano RD. I have done so and it lasted Sani2C with no issues)

So no, you can't run Shimano 9sp shifters on Shimano or SRAM 10sp

Yes, you can run SRAM 9sp and 10sp shifters on Shimano 10sp, but you have to mod it to get it perfect.

and yes, you should look left and right and left again before crossing the road.

USed to be the case with Shimano but not anymore. Shimano changed the pull ratio with their 10 speed/Dynasys stuff.

Sram also changed theirs when they went to 10 speed.

Ironically 9 speed sram shifter is compatible with a 10 speed shimano derailleur with a slight modification (6mm spacer)

EDIT: Sorry I shouldn't tell anyone they "can't" do anything. My mother always said I can do anything if I believe in myself. So if you believe in yourself... and you don't care about changing gears

...you can run whatever shifters and RD you want!

I stand corrected about the SRAM 10 speed pull ratio change.

Yeah I wasn't sure myself. I thought they stuck with 1:1 because that's almost a SRAM trademark. Then you mentioned a change...

But I checked on their site and it seems it is still 1:1 (or Exact Actuation, as they call it).
