Hi All,

So I recently bought a set of American classic race 29 wheels but I would like to get rid of them in favour of something stronger. Currently they're coming out of true and creaking a lot. I would like to get something that I can mostly put on and forget about.

I dont do downhill or anything like that, but I would like to try very small jumps/drop offs when I encounter them as well as being able to close my eyes and smash blindly through rocky rough terrain without worrying about my wheels breaking, buckling or dinging. :)

So... here is the part that everyone if going to love. I would like to avoid hope hubs, from reading around, it seems like they're just too noisy. What other hub options are there if I were to go with something like a flow/arch ex rim?

Other than that, are there any factory build wheelsets I could consider? any other rim hub combos I should consider? What do you have that can take a 90 odd kg rider?

Too many contradictions... Eish.

All the good hubs make a noise. It's like not buying a Ferrari/Lambo etc because it is too loud. So buy a Toyota Prius rather. We all buy the good hubs because they make a wonderful noise...

WTB and Spank make decent trail rims but every 29er wheel I've ridden flexes when pushed hard with my weight. (90kg)

DT Swiss M520 are VERY HEAVY ( and too narrow), Put some Stans ZTR Crest rims on your AM Race hubs, handbuilt, strong and reliable option. Or Arch rims to be safe. ( I think 50 grams more per rim), or try the new American classic 101 rims.

Mavic SLR are too narrow for me and expensive , with some hub issues.

Shimano XT also too narrow and rather heavy, with open bearings.

I would get WTB or Blunt rims before any of the Stans ZTR options. This is advice from my wheelbuilder.

When reading around, I have seen a lot of mention of wtb i19 and i23. Maybe I should read a bit more on these.

As for hub noise, my brother rides with stans hubs and they sounds quite noisy, I have heard that the hopes are quite a bit noisier, is this right?

Yes, the Ferrari is louder than the Porsche. But not as loud as the Pagani Zonda. Buy the Toyota or Volkswagen.

Which model crossmax? I see a couple of variations SLR, ST, SX... Trying to narrow it down a bit before I start the long process of looking for prices in SA... :(
