Getting rid of my granny ring will require some more training from my side.

The other day I was visiting my GF in newcastle and we went to Vulintaba country estate. Did a 16km singletrack ride and the one long climb was just too much to be on the second ring.

I had to put it on the granny ring and the biggest rear just to climb and on some parts the back wheel just spun and I stood still, had to get off and walk.

So for now, saving a few grams to go 2x10 will not benefit me and would be unpractical.

I must say that my previous bike had a SLX/XT mix and I don't feel much difference on my current setup. These SRAM components shift just as smooth and quick if maintained/lubed properly.

It's just the darn brakes

So it will be the REBA and new SLX brakes in 4 months.

I hope the REBA comes with a pump seeing that's it's R4500?

I bought the standard AL329 in Feb, no one told me about the type R!!!

Might be interested in buying your old shock off of you if the price is right.

PM me when you are ready though.

@ Rouxtjie, that's good news

@ sk27, I will do that. Will likely be end October.

PS kiwi gave me the best price on a Reba, might want to keep him in mind when you order

I have a 229, came with, IMHO, the biggest piece of sh*t fork out, Suntour XCM. Lasted 4 months and I had to replace it, upgraded to the Recon Gold - what a significant difference!!! Granted the bar was not set high with the original shock, but the upgrade has made it feel like I am now riding a race machine.... Also upgraded the brakes from the std Tektro HDC 300 it came with to Elixer 5, have had the known Elixer issues creep in, took a bit of time to get them 100% dialled in, but since then, they are superb. I did buy these 2nd hand for less than R800 (Fr & R) - saving some cash and want to look at ultimately going the route of Hope X2 Evo. Other noteable upgrades, running tubeless on the Crossmarks (came std with small block 8's)

Upgrade the shock - it will be the most noteable difference, the rest can come over time.... IMHO...

Fork first, then brakes. The rest of the groupset you can replace as it breaks or wears out, unless you're on a weight saving mission and have deep pockets, which it seems is not the case here.

In the meantime take your brakes to a decent mechanic. Elixirs can be made to work pretty well, but it's not easy to get a good bleed. They also need rebuilding every 12 - 18 months to keep them working properly, but hopefully by then you'll be rid of them. SRAM have unfortunately shot themselves in the foot with the taperbore design.

I bought a 2011 specialised rockhopper pro but I asked the shop to swap out the recon silver for a sid xx. Huge improvement in weight. Next will be brakes - have juicy 3's on there. Everything else is fine for now - slx shifters and fd, xt rear and m552 crank.

So I'd agree with the others - upgrade the fork first - then brakes and wheels

Wheels are luckily not an issue. Got the ZTR Arch EX with snakeskin tyres. Already did a full Stan's conversion with valves/rim tape and stan's sealant and they run like a dream.

Upgrade the brakes to SLX buddy, best decision I ever made.... I had those crap Avid elixirs. there were terrible!

SLX works very very well.

Upgrade to 2 x 10 or even 1 x 10 if you dont use your granny gear that much.

Fork = U Turn, Sektor or Reba.. or... if you have money, get a Fox fork, those things are flippin awesome!

That's an advantage, not having to upgrade wheels.

Dude. You get crap fox forks and good fox forks. For the price of one good fox fork you can get a great reba / revelation and a new slx / deore gruppo.

They're just overpriced forks. Not worth the cash they sell for.

If you don't mind me asking, wher'd you get them and at what price?
