She would be eliminated early on in the race, there is no way a woman would be able to compete on equal footing with the men - would not be fair.

There was a female version of the Tour, not sure what happened to that.

Dumbest idea ever. Cycling is one of the sports where the difference between men and women is the biggest. Men get the advantage of all the muscle and don't have to carry their own weight (unless its climbing).

I'm absolutely for promoting women's cycling but this will ridicule more than promote.

Would be very interesting to see Vos between Cavendish and Sagan in a sprint

I was also confused, because I thought they wanted to race with the men.

But I think they actually want their own Tour de France for women.

The idea is to have a female tour. Not race with the boys.

Now we've cleared that up by reading the article I am shocked that there were only 4000 signatures. Womens cycling has been neglected by most governing bodies and development agencies and more and more womens races have disappeared. It should be moving forward not back wards. 2013 has seen some decent steps forward but the huge gaps across all disciplines are shocking.

Why shouldn't you have a race that runs either a day behind or at the same time as the guys (no not with the guys maybe the last 120kms of each stage starting off early and winding up an our or two before the main race comes in)? The infrastructure is there, the permits and the organisation is there.

There are more and more women and girls riding and the participation side is growing hugely. Remember no one thought there was a market for female surfers until Quiksilver launched Roxy, now look at the market that has grown from it.

Nicole Cooke's retirement speech earlier this year laid out a few truths on state of international womens cycling.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2013/jan/14/nicole-cooke-retirement-statement

This year has seen a few new events including female Tour of Qatar, Het Nieuwsblad, Walloone, Tour of Flanders, a US series, the Womens world cup, a couple new female teams and an increase in sister teams for some UCI teams.

And of course the Giro.

Here's Ashleigh M' killing up Mur de Huy earlier in the year. Killer shot.

And richly deserved it would be too, would be great to see the likes of our very own FIRE tearing up the tarmac through the Alps.

Now that I have read the full article....

I'm always in two minds about women's sport. Women deserve their own space to showcase their talents but in most cases of women's sport "the people have spoken" - the crowds are smaller, the sponsors put up less money, there are less athletes, athlete organisations are smaller etc. Women themselves and the general public just doesn't seem as interested in women's sport as they are in mens.

Women's lib and emotions aside - women will always be second tier athletes. Men, thanks to genetics, have more muscle and are faster, stronger, competitive etc.

It's not a sexist thing - people like to see the ULTIMATE. Junior men get the same treatment - they are the fastest junior men out there but because they don't ride as fast as adult men they get less exposure.

Sadly I think it'll only get worse - society is getting more and more hungry for anything that says SUPER ULTIMATE MEGA INSANE UBER ALS style sport and watching the "best of the rest" doesn't quite appeal.

Please don't burn me at the stake - just stating my opinion.

true - even when I watch different sports with my wife and when she sees there are woman competing straight away says she wants to see some action, she would rather watch the men play/partake in that particular sport.

Not even. Deffo some good points and truths.

Issue is hard, women and women's sports has strengths in different areas and mimicking the men is starting from the back foot anyway but you need to piggy back off the guys to get exposure, coverage and sponsorship which leads to cash and audience and the ability to create your own market.

In direct comparison, the guys will always come out on top.

I like watching any top flight sport, people completing at the top of their game. Women's sport is no exception, watching the track and road race at the Olympics was brilliant, just as competitive and fierce as the guys. Women's tennis as well can actually be better than blokes ace fest.

I think you need races like the tour to push the game forward, get more coverage, open the doors more and there will be more investment and hopefully develop independently.

Women's cycling should get more exposure - the mechanics of how this happens I will leave to the experts, but a women's TdF plus Giro plus Vuelta plus Spring Classics would go a long way to doing that, especially under the banner of ASO and the other major promoters.

Let women do the same course, approaching the same distances and see how it pans out.

Equal opportunity would be great for the sport.
