WTFisa "WIFLI" ?

It's a rear derraileur capable of accommodating a 32 rear cassette.

Originally designed for beginners who wanted to move to a double crankset and keep a wide gear range it was used by some world tour riders on the Vuelta and Giro where keeping high cadence on the climbs is difficult.

SRAM now make a RED version because of this.

What is different with a compact crank besides the number of teeth on the chainrings? Smaller BCD?

Yes but some new cranks can handle both ranges.

A "compact" crank doesn't instantly make you a better climber.

That is true, but it can make the difference between getting up the hill and not getting up the hill. My compact made the Argus a real pleasure. I just spun up the hills in my 34/26, and I wasn't all that fit.

Just a logic check chaps...the actual number of teeth front and back don't matter - it's the ratio of the two that matters.

53/12 and 50/11 is only about 3% different (effectively the same thing). In a blind test I nobody would feel the difference.

Likewise - 39/21 and 36/19 is identical.

There are only two ways to make it easier on yourself on the climbs (and by easier I mean pedal faster at exactly the same speed - you will not go faster):

1) Less teeth on the inner front.

2) More teeth on the inner back.

The easiest way to make it easier is more on the inner back - buy a cassette with a 25 or 27. Much cheaper than a new crankset.

Hit a few hills today in the UK on a compact with a 28 on the back. One climb was 27% and i was happy with every extra tooth on the back! With the Cape Cobra coming might just bring one back.

Or maybe. Does 1.4 for both sound about right?

(Apparently it's exactly the same according to my quick Internet research?.(
