I had a real scary moment this morning on my ride into work. Left at 6h30 this morning so it was nice and dark. I had all my lights on, with batteries charged. That is two front lights, one constant and one blinking and two rear lights blinking.

Less than a km from my home, the road is slightly up hill, I am a bit unfit so going rather slowly. I approach a T-junction , with me being on the primary road and a car joining in from the secondary road. There is a stop for the secondary road. I check out the car, the car is waiting, I pass in front of the car, the driver decides to go as I am right in front of the car. Next thing I hear is my nobblies grazing the bumper of the car    .

Fortunately the motorist woke up from his / her brain freeze and stopped. I pulled off to the far side of the rode to catch me breath and thank God I am alive. The motorist drove off without a word. I saw the motorist at the next intersection, but decided to just keep peddling.

All I can say. Be safe out there!

Mate of mine weren't so lucky, lady hit him from the side in broad daylight and broke his collarbone and wrote off his bike! same story

Eish??? You saw the motorist at the next intersection and decided to just keep peddling. You should have pulled him/her out of the vehicle and slapped them around a bit, make them think about cyclist on the road a bit more!!

Yes it is good you are ok. It's amazing how some motorists just do not see bike riders. I think there is a study on it from the US.

Scarier is when I went for a ride recently on a dual sport motorcycle; quite big, orange, noisy, two headlights and an oldish bullet with his blue headed missus started pulling out while I was turning right across what was a stop street for him. I swear the old bustid looked me in the eye and kept moving in front of me. Only when I hooted did he jerk to a stop, well over the stop line and I had time to avoid him and make the turn. Like MichaelD I didn't stop, was shocked, surprised and angry, later with myself as maybe I should have stopped and given him a rev.

The thought crossed my mind, however we live in the same suburb and our paths are bound to cross sometime again. I'd rather not provoke the person and be roadkill next time round.

oi...when I'm in doubt whether a drvier has seen me I rather wait for him /her to go. Those couple of seconds are not worth your life.

I agree and I was careful (my opinion of course). I certainly did not race to get past the car and would have been quite happy for the motorist to go ahead of me.

By the amount of time that lapsed from me seeing the car and it stopped and the time I reached the car it appeared that the car was waiting for me to cross. It seems my interpretation was wrong.

When I was a student I cycled to Uni and one day a chop decided to turn in front of me. I landed on his bonnet and all he did was lean forward and told me to get off his car. All I can say is that having those two front togs on the front of your mtb shows leaves a sweet dent in the side of a car as it drives off and leaves you bleeding on the side of the road.

I have a zero tolerance for people who don't obey the rules of the road and if someone is going to threaten my life in any way, I'm going to fight for it. Who cares about being polite "in case our paths cross again". If you try injure me with your car, I am going to retaliate.
