My second road race ever! IT WAS GREAT! I saw a few accidents.... hope everyone is fine! Please just tell me ............. when you ride in a bunch, why do some guys not take turns to be in the front? Is it not considered rude not to "pull" Surely you work together and take turns? In one of my groups the only people who took turns to be in the front were a young boy, a woman and an older guy. The rest of the guys just hung back? We were not going slowly!

Welcome to the world of the leeches

Some people are unsure of their fitness and,do not want to be dropped too soon, so they stay away from the front. Its all part of the fun of it. I spent the whole day in front and had lots of fun.

Also when the bunches are large it makes the logistics of everyone taking a turn very difficult.

The worst thing to do is sit in a pace line and then refuse to take a turn. That just spoils the work the guys in pace line were trying to achieve.

Hope this helps :)

If you were working with the three others, well done!

Some people would rather sit back and race for the "win" in their particular group, and not worry about the fact that the entire group behind you has caught them, and effectively "beaten" them...

Speaking of which, thanks to the E/F guys who put in some good work into the wind in our somewhat haphazard paceline...

(And to the G/H guy on knobblies who caught us with those cunning Outriders from G group, well done, fella!!)

Ha ha, yes that's often how it works. This morning, out of our group of about 20, only 5 worked, and of those , 3 did 80% of the work. The others just clung on. We made them work for it though. Up the only hill they dropped like flies and around every corner they paid the price for hanging at the back. All great fun though and I don't mind pulling, because I know I'm getting a solid workout and the leeches are not. So, next time they suffer more and I suffer less. Also, 90% of the crashes happen in the mid and tail of the bunch, another good reason to sit in the front third and take your turn pulling, even if only briefly.

It's called bunch riding.

It is etiquette to spend a minute in the front and take that turn before chilling again in the back.

Racing is when there are strategies and tactics used like breakaways, attacking on a climb to shed weaker riders or surging to burn out the less strong.

Often teams are involved in racing.

Racing is more prevalent in the highest seeded bunches where etiquette is upheld more commonly.

Really good ride. Was hoping for a good time but took a tumble when the guy in front of me got stuck in a rut and went down.

Still managed to finish fairly well.

A nice fast ride event.....even the wind behaved.
