Here some answers! It reminds me what an older riders (UWE then also on PPA committee) said to me about 14 months back - Pete when you no long on the committee league will stop within a year - I chose not to believe him, but it seems the statement may have more merit than I anticipated!

It is really great to see the Lights by Linea events taking off - ultimately if the association (PPA) does not want to look after the road racing cyclist - they will do it themselves!

"Dear league rider

We have unexpectedly run into problems regarding the 2013 PPA Spring league, with two Spring road funrides informing us within the last week that they are either having to cancel the event or are unable to host a league event. This left only three league events for the Spring series.

In addition, while we have received tacit approval from Western Cape Cycling that they will support PPA’s leagues, we expect final resolution between PPA and CSA to be reached only during September - after the date of the first road funride of the season.

We regret to say that there will therefore not be a 2013 PPA Spring league series, although seeded category riding will, as always, be offered at the funrides.

However, the good news is that the league events for Summer 2014 have been confirmed, being:

- Tour de PPA (19 Jan 2014)

- Bouckaert-Soenen (26 Jan 2014)

- Medallion Tour de Stellenbosch (16 Feb 2014)

- Depending on the road works in the Southern Suburbs, another funride will be added to the 2014 leagues calendar, alternatively a criterium will be held

- A hill climb – either before Tour de PPA (this is our first choice) or before Medallion, depending on traffic permissions

Entries for the 2014 league will open on 4 November 2013 and will close on Friday 10 January 2014. As in the past, cyclists will be able to enter the series as a whole; enter individual events; or join the league during the series if unable to ride the first event. For more information, please email leagues@pedalpower.org.za.

We look forward to an exciting league series in 2014.

While PPA have successfully failed the road (racing) cyclist - others are stepping in to keep things going:

The (lights by Linea) road league from what I hear its 7, 14, 28 Sept. 5 19 Oct. BUT DONT HOLD ME TOO IT just yet please. I will double & triple check. I want to get all the info and routes as well. In the mean time go LIKE WP Boland cycling on Facebook or follow us on @CyclingRSA to stay in the loop.

Anybody nominated anybody yet? Just entered my 31st Argus cycle tour - and after about an hour of deliberation I still renewed my PPA membership, not sure exactly why!

<sarcasm>I renew my PPA membership so I can get discounted race entries.</sarcasm>

my comments -

i knew the Cape Cobra was off a month ago - so what other event was cancelled.

organisers want leagues - they attract more riders - this is a poor excuse

i have seen the approval by west cape to sanction ppa events - tacit approval , its either approved or not there's nothing tacit about it.

Resolution to what , you have your sanctioning by local body

seeded category riding - ag pleez what next

as in the past - you had to pay upfront for the full series. finis & klaar , come rain or shine.

Just move on and accept that unless a PPA committee is voted in which is still committed to see road cycling happen - less and less (PPA) road events will continue to take place!

It may well only in the future be only The Cape Argus Pick 'n Pay cycles tour (the event which makes their bank account very healthy), Double Century and 1 toner. The question is will these events then also see less and less participants as less people will be interested in road cycling - thus the cash from The Cape Argus Pick 'n Pay cycle tour will also be come smaller? If that is a the case a very poor business plan!

But let all give thanks to this series:

We are now moving the race on the 14th September in aid of a Western Cape Road and Track Festival. We will now race on the 15th September.

Please support the racing at the velodrome. If they tear it down you will be training in the rain. We have all benefited from a track session somewhere so lets keep the dream alive.

So too I expect to see the track fraternity out in force on the Sunday. bring your gazebos and show us you can ride on the road too.

Reading through the above document, the following came to mind:

1. PPA is doing a better job than anyone else I can think of to further the interests of your average cyclist (many thousands of them) in the Cape.

2. PPA is perhaps not doing all it can for the elite road racing (3 hundred and something who raced league last year) in the Cape.

3. PPA is doing a whole lot for mountain biking that few people even know about.

4. Mountain biking seems to be growing while road riding seems stable.

5. The tiff with CSA better get sorted soon as it is bad for cycling all over.

6. PPA is solid financially and open about it due to prudent management.

7. PPA have the financial clout to invest more in road racing in the Cape.

8. PPA do not have the financial clout to support all cycling all over the rest of SA, it will bleed them dry

9. PPA is a valuable asset and should not be allowed to be destroyed by politics

Point No. 2 and number No. 7 are the ones I am concerned about - given PPA financial position is predominately due to 1 road cycling event - The Cape Argus Pick 'n Pay cycle tour - one would hope the committee would see fit to invest as much money necessary back into road cycling.

The 2nd half of point 4 I do not agree with as the number of road fun rides are on the slide. I tried to get confirmation of this yesterday and certainly will try and have confirmation by Monday night - but certainly while I was still on the committee the cost the PPA charged a road fun ride organizer twice as much as a MTb organizer - with the drop off of road fun rides should this still happen (I already suggested change while on the committee). We all know that putting on a road event is far more costly / difficult than a MTB event due to traffic and the cost around traffic.

Please don't misunderstand any of the above - I am not by any means suggesting that more money should be spent on road cycle at the expense of anything else than PPA finical position and I am not suggesting that PPA should go anywhere close to the red to get rod riding back to where they were, possibly just not increasing their asset value by over R3 million in 2013 / 2014 - looking at the numbers thats what the increase was over 2012 / 2013!

agree with you 100%, i have been a member of the PPA and of a cycling club affiliated to CSA since 1989 and it would be sad if cycling people are not able to work together.

at this stage of the year - we have been informed that road events have been cancelled etc etc and no league - the reasons don't make sense to me.

the wpca & ppa worked together last year for spring league , why not this year? if they did, would it harm their court case?

there will be spring road races - ppa are losing customers, will they get them back?

Road races do cost more to organise if you throw money at it.

the wpca winter league generated R62 000 in entry fees and we paid out R30 000 in prize money.

it was run on a shoe string budget with many volunteers from clubs.

it wasn't as grand as the ppa leagues or the recent light by linea but the model works.

with the way things are moving racing will take off.

just got confirmation that a timing system to blow your brooks off has been purchased.
