If I understand right then most items from CRC and similar would then be grey despite the fact that it is original and one pays near enough full price?

We need to flag on this thread the online web sites selling branded bikes and components that are known to be fake.

be carefull listing them if you are not 100% sure.

but a heads up of "make 100% sure that the products are not "rebranded" before you buy from ????" would be a nice to know.

100% correct. for any warrenty claims on items bought from CRC or the likes you would have to go to them and not the local companies, unless they have an agreement with a local company to honour the warrenties.

This opens a new can of worms. Selling the genuine article second hand if it is grey will lead to problems for the buyer should he/she ever require support.

as well as selling goods at full price while not advising buyers that there warranty may not be 100% Kosher due to it being grey

booom another can of worms indeed...so all components must disclose the origin then...

I think pretty much everyone knows that buying used items have no warranty and as such this is reflected in the price considered to buy such items and taking the risk

I'm thinking of items like garmin where you may require local distributor to assist with problem.

@ Hennie.

the product or bike was manufactured by the OEM so it can not be a fake.

the Grey normaly means that the purchase point was not from your local supplier, normaly within your own country, but from abroad.

you could push this to say that you have a grey product when you buy it online from ctn and you are in JHB, you did not buy it from your local supplier so it could be classed as "Grey".

another very thick grey area.

if you buy a bike from the factory or HQ in the USA whilst on holiday and have it shipped to SA it is not a fake but it is "grey"

True  Ignore my previous post

I can't see myself ever buying a "fake" bicycle or any equipment for that matter but certain stuff like clothing I don't mind. I've bought some kits from cycling-jersey and the quality is pretty decent. Bikes are a definite no-no for me.

I think the point of this thread is to protect you so you don't buy a fake. Anything pre-owned is a risk as there are lots of guys out there dressing up mutton as lamb.

Amazing how a thread about consumer protection turns into a battleground.

Hi Hubbers,

I posted a note on Fakes and specifically our zero tolerance against fakes in the Classifieds recently.

I think it's a great idea to have a thread dedicated to Fakes, spotting fakes, etc. as this is clearly a growing issue.

As others have pointed out, let this not degenerate into a heated debate on 'chinese carbon' as that is not the topic of discussion As mentioned there are various threads dedicated to this topic.

Please keep this clean and on topic to maintain it as a useful resource.

Thanks,

Matt

Yeah, can we not clean this fred up (~9 pages long already!! and i still do not know how to spot a fake...) to stay on topic...

For example how do I spot a fake pair of oakley's...
