Took a little tumble yesterday had to readjust the deraileur and doing some cleaning. Gears are changing smoothly now by chain is catching. See pic. Did I bend that bit (don't know what that piece is called )post-44041-0-16280600-1378027084_thumb.jpg

Hanger, is what it is called.

Where is the chain catching? Difficult to see from that pic

The pic is of bike upside down. The chain runs between the 2 black pieces of metal.(The blurry bit on the photo ) It is rubbing against the one side irrespective of which gears I'm in.

If it is rubbing there, you have bent the RD itself

:( how do I fix it? Can I fix it?

I don't know what an RD is, but taking it apart it looks like the lower pulley might be the problem

Doesn't look like the fall caused the problem, just wear and tear as the teeth on the lower pulley is much more worn than the upper one. For a bike that hasn't done much mileage it's rather odd.

so a mate of mine is of the opinion I don't need to worry about fixing this - i'm concerned the extra strain on the chain causing it to snap or something, but I don't do any hard riding. it's just some extra noises.

for a cheap 2k bike i've already spend close on 1k fixing things - how much would one of these pulley thingies cost?

So I decided to wait till after this weekend before taking my bike in to check it out - cleaned the pulley and put it back - I wasn't sure if there's a right / wrong way - but I put it in the opposite way to what it was - and now it's stopped knocking.

money saved (for now)

although the fact that the bottom one has worn so much more than the top one tells me it's just a symptom to a different problem, but will check after this weekends ride.

Your derailer pulleys (those black things) are completely stuffed. They should have teeth, yours have pimples.

With such a pulley, the chain jumps the pimples and runs next to the pulley instead of on it, causing the chain to rub against the derailler cage's side plates (the two black plates).

Get new pulleys and take note of the instructions. Top and bottom are not the same and the bottom one is directional. It is directional not because the bearing likes to turn in a certain direction only, but because the pulley is offset.

Naah! Durban is dead. I tried zillions of times to get something going there. Each time a few okes take the lure but then surf comes up and they go all jhuz whah, smoke a joint and forget to pay.

I am in for Durban and will pay now.

BTW-one of the few who does not do joints.

If there are enough guys (who don't do joints) and pay up front I think we may get it together?

Hey Johan, thanks for the advice. What would cause them to have worn so badly? I figure it's a symptom of something else. The top pulley seems less worn.

Rode on Saturday and the knocking didn't seem too bad but haven't checked properly. Will visit my LBS for new pulleys

, but they don't have stock ATM. PS any idea how much pulleys should cost?

Also, curious why you have a specific ladies course and why is it only one day?

If the problem cropped up after a tumble , even though pulleys are a bit worn, it would appear the one side of the bottom of the derailleur cage is bent in towards the pulley and the chain is catching on the cage?

So basically a pair of water pump pliers needed to carefully straighten the cage or take the RD off the bike and pulleys off and carefully hammer the cage flat?

Or maybe the pulley bearing/spindle is all mashed and loose so the pulley is wobbling all over the show and making the chain intermittently catch on the cage, so in that case new pulleys will sort it out?

Yes, but I am not holding my breath when I do deja-vu.

I'm cynical but thanks for trying. I appreciate it.
