Yeah i have a STD crank. previous bike had a compact crank - perhaps that is the way to go?

2 teeth will make quite a big difference, before buying check that your jockey will be ok for a larger cassette, I remember my LBS saying something about bigger than 27 might be a problem with some jockey's (short cage jockey)

so i have a 12 and 26 or 27 not sure but on the argus got dropped on the downhill, are you saying i can swop the 12 for 11 without having to change the whole casette?

Not sure if you can change just the 12, but if you are looking for a 11/26 SRAM have a 11 / 26 cassette which is compatible with shimano

I have been running a 12-28 with a 53X39 for almost a year and no problems.

Changed to a 12-25 with a 50-34 and wish i had gone compact ages ago.The 50-12 gets me to 45-50km/h on the flats with a strong tailwind.

I have a 12-25 and a 11-27 cassette. I used to ride the 11-27 as it came with my bike. Then switched to a 12-25 a few months back. I can't say I missed the 27 gear - maybe on the steeper climbs a little, but there aren't many of them.

What size cranks are on the bike?

I've also got a 50/34 but prefer the 11-26, mostly because the 26 comes in handy on those short steep nasty climbs (Zurich 70.3 in particular which is what made me change to a 26) and I also like to use the 11 on long downhill's where you can easily make up time on other cyclists who only have a 12 :whistling:

I never need cannot use the 11 on flats, no matter how strong the wind blows...

I ordered a 11-28 from CWC , I am trying this ratio for the first time this weekend , 11-23 did not work for Me 11-25 was a bit better . So lets see this weekend ,I seem to cramp easier when grinding big gears ,I ride in Suikerbosrand nature reserve quite often ,so a 11-23 is a no no for Me there .

I recently switched to a compact not out of choice though and the hardest adjustment has been finding the sweet spot when on a 34 chainring. On the same climbs though where I was using a 39/25 im using a 34/19 or 21. I do find though that I switch more to the big ring now when on flats where in the past I was comfortable staying onthe 39/12. Work out your current ratios compared to what your new ratios would be. It is cheaper though to switch cassettes.

Gear ratio is: chainring teeth divided by cassette teeth multiplied by wheel size

Example: 39/25 x 27.5 (700c) = 42.9 inch ratio.

I also changed to a compact recently, but also changed my cassette from a 12-25 to an 11-23 to compensate for lack of teeth upfront. So far, so good.

Yes. You can mix and match any ratio on Shimano cassettes.

I'm talking road cassettes ~ not sure about the cassettes the dirty people use.

Hi gents,

I have always used a standard crank, but when I bought my new bike it came with a compact on it. I battled to get used to it for 6 months and then swopped back to the 53/39 and for the first I enjoy my new bike.

Possibly just habbit, not sure

Decided to keep my 11-25 on my 35mm wheels for training or flatter races and put the 12-27 on my 20mm wheels for hilly races ;).....
